Vereinheitlichungen nutzen, Tipp-Arbeit einsparen
<script> alert(‘Ich brauche kein type-Attribut!’); </script>
<input type=”text” disabled=”disabled” /> <!– XHTML-Style –>
<input type=”text” disabled> <!– HTML(5)-Style –>
<input id=”datumsfeld” type=”date”>
var feld = document.getElementById(‘datumsfeld’);
if(feld.type != ‘date’){
// Hier jQuery u.Ä. für einen herkömmlichen JS-Datumspicker verwenden
<ul id=”metal”>
<li data-artist=”Judas Priest” data-album=”Painkiller”>Painkiller</li>
<li data-artist=”Metallica” data-album=”Ride the Lightning”>For whom the Bell Tolls</li>
<li data-artist=”Iron Maiden” data-album=”The Number of The Beast”>run to the Hills</li>
var titel = document.getElementsByTagName(‘li’);
for(var i = 0; i < titel.length; i++)
alert(titel[i].innerHTML + ‘von’ + titel[i].getAttributeNode(‘data-artist’).value + ‘ stammt vom Album ‘ + titel[i].getAttributeNode(‘data-album’).value);
Übrigens: innerHTML wird mit HTML5 auch Bestandteil des Webstandards-Kanon und keine Nichtstandard-Funktion mehr.
Fazit

Granted, the vast majority of website usability tips will concern your website design and copy. Most information people are looking for is in your navigation structure and your page text. However, images play a key role in website usability, as well.
A single picture can draw the eye from a sea of text, and a skilled web designer will carefully arrange images to pull the visitor along toward navigation features, action points, or any other place that leads to web conversion. here are a few quick suggestions for the images on your site.
Place images with purpose. If you can’t state exactly why a picture is included on a particular page, then remove it.
Images need to:
- Directly relate to the pages’ core value proposition
- Must be relevant for the visitor’s situation- does it answer their need more effectively than copy
- Does the image expand, enhance your offer in ways that your words cannot.
There’s nothing wrong with white space—it’s very good, in fact—but website usability will suffer if the visitor’s eye is constantly jumping around between images that aren’t contributing to the site’s overall purpose—whether that’s entertainment, education, sales, or whatever else.
Be consistent. Nothing, and I mean nothing, says unprofessional like inconsistently formatted images on a site. sure, there will be some variation from page to page, but if you don’t have a style guide in place that determines how you format and present your images, then you’re sure to jar your visitor and decrease website usability.
If you like square product images with glowy white backgrounds, then try to keep that consistent across nearly every product page. News items and blogs might be exempt, but you’ll want some guidelines for images there, too.
Crop carefully. some people like to crop images down to their simplest focal point, instead of taking advantage of all the clean extra space a landscape shot might provide. Let your images be bold, elongated, asymmetrical—so long as it contributes to and flows well with the overall design of the page.
Do, however, crop when too much header or footer space is distracting from the focal point of the pic. just try to keep all of your images from becoming simple 200 x 200 blocks of boredom, and you’ll see website usability improve as visitors appreciate your layout and design.
Leveling, leveling, leveling. your folks in accounting may not have budgeted for the most classy of cameras, but if you’re forced to take your own images, chances are you might not have access to all the lighting and capturing equipment that major companies have.
However, even if you’re taking the shots with the intern’s digital camera, you can still dress up your photos professionally if you have a basic knowledge of Photoshop or some other touchup program. Do some research on your own, or find someone in your office that does this sort of thing for fun already.
Make sure the photos on your site have consistent saturation, color balancing, and leveling properties. These things are almost imperceptible, but you can always notice if they’re off.
Add alternate text. Not only is it polite to the visually impaired who visit your website, it’s also best practice for SEO. Adding alternate text will increase your website usability for those who depend on captions.
Done correctly, images can really improve your website’s conversion rate.

Websites need to be useful. They need to match your visitor’s expectations and needs, but until you ask them for feedback, optimizing your website for usability is just a guessing game.
There are several options for getting that feedback, some more expensive than others. the expensive routes include hiring firms dedicated to optimizing websites for usability, and if you can afford it, that’s an investment that will most likely yeild some significant returns.
There is a free alternative though, and although it isn’t as informative as organized focus groups, it will get you headed in the right direction and offer enough feedback to dramatically improve the user experience, from your visitor’s perspectives.
4Q is a web survey – it shows a popup (visit the 4Q website to see what that looks like) when you first visit the site, asking users to opt-in to a little survey. If the user clicks “Yes,” a new window will appear and then minimize, so that they can finish the survey after leaving your website. you decide the questions that will be asked, and the user is given the opportunity at the end to write their general thoughts, insights, and feedback regarding your website. 4Q takes care of gathering and reporting the data, which you can access by logging into the admin section on their website.
Good questions to ask may include:
- Rate your overall satisfaction after browsing through the website.
- What was the purpose of your visit?
- Did you find what you were looking for?
- Rate the difficulty you experienced navigating the website.
- Rate the usefulness of the content on the website.
- (If testing a new website design) If you are a returning visitor, how do you like the new look?
- Do our solutions/products/services match what you were looking for?
- Please describe what you liked about the website.
- Please describe any changes we can make to improve the website.
Motivate your visitors to take the survey with a promo code, free shipping, or a free whitepaper, and don’t take too much of their time.
You don’t want to ask all these questions, and depending on your reasons for implementing the survey on your site, pick questions that will meet your goals. And don’t ask too many questions – your visitors are doing you a favor, so don’t waste their time. They will be more likely to fill out the survey if you offer something in return, such as a promo code, free shipping, or a free whitepaper.
The admin section allows you to manage the amount of users that will see the survey, so that you don’t have to bombard 100% of your traffic with the survey (make sure you use a number high enough to yeild accurate statistics, though).
It is important to look at the results of the survey with the right attitude – you will most likely be very surprised at some of the responses, but avoid discarding scathing or seemingly unreasonable feedback – there is a reason for it. It’s an opportunity to improve your website in ways that will affect your visitor’s attitudes towards your website, and will result in higher conversions and results.

The term Usability is not something new and its importance is well known to webmasters. Despite this the concern regarding usability never gets off their minds for it is directly related to the user experience. It is one of the essential factors which are given high attention while designing and developing a website.
Usability refers to the ability of a site to allow a smooth and friendly experience to its users where they are able to find the required information in a simplified manner. in other words, the ease with which a user can utilize a site depending upon the purpose (finding information, filling a request form, making a purchase, posting feedback, etc) amounts to usability.

There are various things which go into making a site highly usable including the various applications that it contains. in this article we will present some useful tips following which helps a lot in increasing the overall usability of a site and thus lead to a pleasant user experience. As it doesn’t make sense to offer a site, the features of which are difficult to use, it is worthwhile to optimize the usability.
General TipsA simpler Site Navigation
It is utmost important to make the site navigation clear and consistent. It must guide the users and lead them to desired destinations in the site. It must not make them guess as to what they need to do next. in this regard, it is beneficial to include ‘Site Search’ feature at an appropriate position (upper left or upper right) on the site to aid the visitors.
Easy to scan Content
Website content should be presented in such a manner that allows easy scanning. This is because users don’t want to spend too much time in understanding what the page is all about. therefore it is the responsibility of the designer to make it attractive and easy to grasp.
Consistent User Interface
It is wiser to have a consistent user interface as it helps the users develop familiarity with the site. also it is a general observation that users resist changes and like to see things in a similar fashion. Such an interface help the users take required actions.
Keep the logo, company name at the top
A visitor must always be aware as well as reminded of where he/she is. therefore it is essential to have the name of the company or the Logo at the top of each page. It also helps if visitors are directed to a site from some other source.
Make help pages visible for visitors
A user may require any kind of assistance or clarification while navigating a site. therefore it is a good practice to make help Pages clearly visible on the site so that visitors have quick access to the information they need.
Tips to increase web application UsabilityCall to Action buttons – make them stand out
Going by the common assumption that customers/ visitors will not take an action unless prompted, it is required to make the call to Action buttons prominent enough to incite the visitors. Make them appealing and visible for the users.
Let users know the progress
It can be frustrating for a user to keep guessing what is being done or whether something is really happening or not. This may make them leave the site without using the application. For example, if user is left to guess as to what percentage of file has been downloaded or whether the downloading process has started or not, he/she is bound to feel lost. therefore it is better to make them know the status or progress with some visual feedback. by indicating that the process has started/completed or remaining will not raise any doubts in the user’s mind.
Use Breadcrumbs
Users always like to know where they are especially while using the applications as it helps them gain confidence as well control to get back if required. using Breadcrumbs to indicate their position can serve the purpose as they provide the clear indication.
Visitors hate repetition – Don’t make them do so
Asking visitors to perform the same thing repeatedly is like forcing them to leave. to say for example, making them fill the same information again and again or bombarding them with multiple questions is strictly not to be done. It is good to keep things simple and short to retain their interest.
Keep the back button ready
It is the tendency of most users to confirm and reconfirm various things before finally using the application. in this case if they are provided the facility to go back and check once again, they feel more comfortable and will be saved from the fear of being lost. Therefore is it is advisable to have a back button.
So derive the benefits from above mentioned tips to increase the usability of your website and various applications. we look forward to feedback and suggestions from readers.
