Duo wanted over car, booze and fuel theft

POLICE are looking for two men wanted over a car theft, two alcohol thefts and a petrol drive-off.

A green Holden Commodore VP sedan was stolen from Lynton Ave, Gilles Plains on Wednesday, midnight.

It has the SA registration XFE-012.

About 30 minutes later, the same car was involved in a petrol drive-off from the BP petrol station on North East rd, Holden Hill.

"later that morning, about 1.30am, two men smashed the front glass door of the Pooraka Football Club on McCarthy Court and stole an amount of alcohol," a police spokeswoman said.

"Both men fled when disturbed by a member of the public and were seen getting into the green VP Holden Commodore sedan."

The men then broke through the glass window of the Liquorland bottle shop in the Ingle Farm Shopping Centre shortly before 2am.

They stole alcohol and returned to the Commodore which had a woman sitting in the rear seat.

She is described as Aboriginal in appearance, aged about 20 with long dark hair.

The first suspect has a medium build and he was wearing a thick woolly knitted hat, a dark coat and light-coloured trousers.

The second has a slim build and he was wearing a green jacket and dark trousers.

The car has not been found.

Police ask anyone who sees the vehicle to call the Police Assistance line on 131 444.

Anyone with information should contact BankSA Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 sa.crimestoppers.com.au.

Padthaway crash victim speaks out about tragedy

a FAMILIAR face gave Josie Jackson a feeling of hope after a horrific road accident last week.

————————————

LYING by the side of the road, burning wreckage and twisted debris nearby, Josie Jackson looked up at the face of the ambulance officer holding her hand and felt relief.

It was one of her own – a Keith local who knew her, who knew her family and was telling her that she and her husband would be OK and would soon be on their way to Keith Hospital.

South-East farmers Josie, 54, and Jamie, 55, were on their way home from Naracoorte on Wednesday when their HiLux collided with a Commodore wagon coming the other way on Riddoch Hwy, near Padthaway.

The crash killed four people from a family of five in the other car – a family Josie and her husband would later discover they knew, and to whom they were related.

"when you’re lying there on the side of the road, out in the middle of nowhere, to have local people you know come along and look after you, you just automatically feel like you’re in good hands," Josie said.

"You’ve got someone you know and you can hang on to their hand, ask them what’s happening while they’re cutting your clothes off, filling you up with painkillers and putting you on a stretcher."

When Josie and Jamie pulled themselves from their crumpled HiLux, they had no idea the people in the other car were Stacey Jackson, 36, her husband Scott and children Alex, 1, Aubert, 2, and Jack, 9.

Only Stacey survived.

"It all happened so quickly," Josie said. "all I could do was just put my foot on the brake and hang on – I thought we were going to die."

Josie, with a broken foot and cracked sternum, and Jamie, with three broken ribs and a broken arm, managed to wedge their doors open enough to get out of the car.

Within 10 minutes, they were being treated by Keith ambulance officers – locals with familiar, reassuring faces, who kept them calm and rang their daughter Matilda, 24, to inform her of their condition.

They weren’t told it was their relatives in the other car until later that night.

"I could see a stroller out on the ground and I asked a couple of people: `Oh God, is there a baby in the other car?’, but no one would tell me," Josie said.

The couple was taken to Keith Hospital and then airlifted to Adelaide.

"when we got to Keith Hospital, it was almost like going home rather than arriving in a foreign entity like a hospital," Jamie said.

"and because they were locals, they were ringing local people like our neighbours to let them know an accident happened, so our farm and animals were looked after instantly," Josie added.

The Jacksons say the tragic accident highlights the need to save the hospital from closure. "you need that ambulance care, plus the facilities, to deal with a tragic accident like that on a major highway," Josie said.

"without Keith Hospital, we would have gone back to Naracoorte – further from Adelaide – and it would have been a plane, not a helicopter, to get us to Adelaide, which takes even longer."

Jamie was admitted to the Flinders Medical Centre on Wednesday evening and waited until Friday evening for a plate to be inserted into his broken arm.

"I know it’s a low priority but it shows how much pressure big hospitals like this are under," he said.

"if country hospitals like Keith close, and the local patients who don’t need emergency care can’t go to Keith any more, they’ll have to come up to Adelaide hospitals – which are already under stress," Josie said.

"It’s very short-sighted of this government."
