5 establishments fail health inspection

The state’s Department of Agriculture conducts yearly inspections of food-serving establishments to ensure public safety and safe food-handling practices. Schools are inspected twice per year, more often if complaints are received, according to Lydia Johnson, director of the Bureau of Food Safety and Laboratories.

Whether an establishment is considered compliant or non-compliant is the discretion of the inspector, “because they’re in the establishment,” Johnson said.

There are, however, several violations for which inspectors should automatically consider establishments non-compliant, she said. Called “critical violations,” they include food temperature issues, issues with chemicals and how they’re handled, and employee hygiene.

Depending on the severity of the situation, inspectors and their supervisors could file citations or close an establishment, Johnson said.

Below is a list of establishments listed as compliant and out-of-compliance for inspections conducted Aug. 16-23.

OUT OF COMPLIANCE

Interstate 83 Diner, 5220 Susquehanna Trail, York.

Action: Issued 14 violations, including:

– a container of WD-40 and glass cleaner stored above or on the same shelf with food, equipment, and/or single-service articles

– employee personal items stored with food and single-use items

– no hot water at the waitress hand sink

– several raw animal foods stored above ready-to-eat foods in three different refrigerators

– in-use knives stored between table edges or between tables, an area not easily cleanable

– wet wiping cloths in kitchen area not being store in sanitizer solution

– bainemarie food held at 48 degrees rather than 41 degrees or below as required

– flour for breading fish had clumps and was not being sifted every four hours

– thermometers for ensuring proper temperatures of food not available

– ice machine deflector plate not clean to sight and touch

– salad bar door handles with food residue, not clean to sight and touch

– condensate drain line causing pooled water on the floor

– no sign or poster posted at the handwash sink in the restroom area to remind food employees to wash their hands

– walk-in fan covers with accumulation of static dust.

Comment: Owner Billi Kostarelos said the diner passed a follow-up inspection and the issues have been corrected.

He said he will “double-check” food safety practices in the future to make sure the restaurant stays in compliance.

Little Caesar’s, 2165 York Crossing Drive, York.

Action: Issued four violations, including:

– outside waste handling unit and storage area “extremely dirty, sticky.”

– paper towel dispenser at the front hand sink not operating properly

– floor drain under the three compartment sink not clean and old food, dirt and debris on floor from the previous day’s business

McDonald’s No. 6499, 897 W. Broadway, Red Lion.

Action: Issued 6 violations, including:

– observed grill cook scratching his or her ear and rubbing his or her lips while wearing single-use disposable gloves and not washing hands and changing gloves as required until approached by the inspector and informed

– observed employee fill drinking cup with edible ice while running a cup and his or her hand through the drinking ice

– an opened block of sliced cheese found on the sandwich preparation area without anything indicating the time removed from refrigeration. the plastic food clock next to the table for tracking disposal times was not being used to indicate disposal time

– heavy mold-like growth inside soda dispensing nozzle in the drive-up window area

Comment: Franchise owners did not return calls for comment.

Rivertown Restaurant, 960 Hellam St., Wrightsville.

Action: Issued five violations, including:

– wiping cloths in the kitchen not soaking in sanitizing solution when not in use as required

– food being stored uncovered in refrigerated areas

– dried, crusted food debris on the cutting blade, blade housing, and other parts of the electric food slicer.

– no handwash sink for employees to use behind the bar

– no sign or poster at the handwash sink in the restrooms to remind food employees to wash their hands.

Comment: Manager Bessie Walker said the restaurant is working to correct the issues.

She said there has never been a sink behind the bar, “which all these years was never written up in any other report.”

She said employees were busy, in the middle of lunch hour, and weren’t attentive to covers on refrigerated items. they are being more aware, she said.

The posters are missing at the sink because bar patrons “swipe them often,” she said. “You put one up, it’s gone.”

Springfield Bowling Concessions , 9335 Susquehanna Trail South, seven Valleys.

Action: Issued two violations, because the concession unit was not turned on for temperatures to be taken and the unit did not have water available.

Comment: an owner did not return calls for comment.

Is it safe to re-use plastic food storage bags that have contained meat products?

If so what is the safest way to clean them?

Wash them with warm/hot water & soap. I would only recommend putting the same type of things in it. for example, if it previously had chicken then don't put fruit or veggies.
But I wouldn't reuse it; just my the cheaper brands – Aldi's, Family Dollar both sell them.

plastic is porous so it holds the "bad stuff"
I would not because you would probably spend more on cleaning products and time than is worth it for a bag
(if you really want to use bleach)

If you clean them with warm water and dish detergent (preferable antibacterial or microbial), you can reuse them

I wouldn't reuse bags that held raw meat. I do rewash with hot soapy water and let dry, to reuse bags that held chips, sandwiches, other stuff that's not raw meats, milk, or egg products. better to be safe than sorry!

I would not do it.

Negative. No. as far as sanitation goes: even if you use hot soapy water, the bags are very difficult to get completelly dry. Just buy new bags

I would not re-use any plastics that have previously
contained fresh meat.

Where can I order round food storage containers?

I read there are qualitive round food storage containers, does anybody here knows where to achieve these goods? I heard about these goods on TV. Answer please.
I'm looking forward to your suggestions!

Bio Robot Fridge Concept

You might wonder how the next generation refrigerators may be like. although there are now refrigerators that are unlike those of refrigerators past by virtue of their features, here is a unique concept of a refrigerator that may just be as interesting. the Bio Robot Refrigerator concept may be a refrigerator of the future that may have no equal as of now.

The Bio Robot Refrigerator is a concept suggested by Russian designer Yuriy Dmitriev for the Electrolux Design Lab contest. This unique concept of a refrigerator makes use of a special gel to help keep food fresh. Users just insert any type of food into the special gel and it stays fresh for a longer period of time. although questions on how the gel can stay cool, it does offer a unique take on how people make try to keep food fresh and safe to eat for a longer period of time. And by the looks of it, this refrigerator may also be considered a green device since it may have a lesser carbon footprint than today’s refrigerators. For now, the Bio Robot Fridge may remain as a concept. But who knows? it might just be something that most homes in the future might have as a common appliance.
