Ask Dave Taylor: Should I upgrade my Mac to Mac OS X Lion?

Q: There’s always something that means my computer’s never quite updated with the latest and greatest. now it’s my MacBook. Apple’s released “Lion.” should I upgrade?

A: That cuts to the heart of our modern technological age, and highlights the crazy pace of change and progress. Nothing is ever done, no ultimate goals are ever attained and we all know that something better is just over the horizon. maybe that’s an essential part of modern life, but it’s sure tiring and just when you think you’re golden — Blamo! — something newer comes along.

Here’s the secret, though, the one that all these hardware and software companies don’t want you to realize: you don’t have to upgrade. sure, hardware gets faster and adds new features, but if your computer isn’t slow, what’s the big deal? yes, the new iPad is better than the previous generation, and the newest cable modem will increase your network speed by 20 percent and all, but if it’s not broke, maybe ya don’t need to fix it.

Software is the same. you want to write a letter to your Aunt Sandy? Ya know, the functionality in Word 2004 is more than enough to space paragraphs, indent lines and send proper info to the printer for it to look good on paper. same thing with operating systems. each major release typically has jumps in performance, usability, functionality and appearance from the previous, but that often also translates into a requirement for better hardware.

Having said all of that, there are updates that defy this pragmatic perspective. When there’s a new technology, like HD video, then the upgrade is worth the investment in both time and money. The difference between Blu-Ray and conventional DVDs, on an HD television, is startling.

If you’re still running Microsoft Vista on any of your computers or servers, it really is worth it to upgrade to Windows 7. It’s that important an update. Windows 98 to Windows Vista? not so much.

In the Mac world, it’s the same story. Leopard to Snow Leopard wasn’t much of a jump and could be ignored. But Lion / Mac OS X 10.7? There are some fundamental changes in how the Mac works that make it a smart upgrade, in my opinion.

Chief among those is that every file automatically has version tracking enabled, so if you realize this evening that the 17 paragraphs you deleted from a document at lunch needed to be saved, it’s got your back: it automatically saves previous versions of the file. Smart.

There’s also a much greater emphasis on multi-finger gestures on the trackpad, so once you give it a whirl I think you’ll find you’re more productive on your MacBook with Lion.

One more: Resume. ever had a bunch of apps open, a bunch of tabs in your Web browser and for some reason you lose power or the system crashes? with the new Resume feature, Lion starts up again and every app relanuches with every window that was open before. It’s magic and it’s a huge time saver, particularly on a laptop.

Oh, and you know what? The upgrade is only $29 and you can get it directly from the Mac App Store (and then install it on multiple machines). That’s pretty sweet, really.

The Job offer is real

100% SCAM.

>>>>Receive checks and money orders <<<<

The entire "job" is just a front for a typical fake check scam.

The checks would be fake. They would bounce after you have sent the money to your "employer" leaving you on the hook for the checks and possibly even facing criminal charges.

How much do you usually spend on books and school supplies for college?

I'm going to be living on campus next year, and I happened to get lucky because I have some stuff already (storage bins, computer, printer, and some supplies for class). I might have to spend money on supplies such as binders, paper, pencils… etc. but how much do students usually spend on college textbooks? Is it better getting used or brand new ones? How much cheaper are used books?

Well, I am a bookstore manager of a regional campus of a major university, and I am can honestly answer your question.

This sounds like it will be your first semester and generally, your first semester will be your most expensive, but that does not hold true today. in hindsight, you definitely want to have at least $500 to $800 set aside for textbooks if you decide to purchase them from the campus bookstore.

Getting used books over new books is a personal preference. Most of the time, it is better to get used books, but sometimes, you will find highlighting, writing, and notes in used books which may cause confusion for some students. others prefer new books because they are clean. it is all up to you.

Sometimes, a used book may not be all that much cheaper than a new book and it would make better sense to purchase the new one. Most times a used book is $25.00 to $40.00 cheaper than a new one, but sometimes, you will find that they are $10.00 or $15.00 cheaper. in that case, one has to weigh options.

That's why many students now purchase them off the net. You can even find sites now that rent textbooks and you can turn them back after the semester is over. also, college bookstores have a Book buy Back at the end of the semester and you can turn them back in for cash. You may not get a whole lot back, but still it could be worth it.

Hope this helps!

Well college textbooks are extremely expensive and depending on the number of classes that you are taking it could run you a pretty penny. some where in the rang of 500-800 dollars. some textbooks just for one can be over $100.00 It's best to get your books used, especially if they are the same edition. You're going to save a bunch of money (again depending on the credit hours) you could save anywhere from 200-300 bucks total if you buy used book. I always tried to get them used because they were so much cheaper (most of the time).

Another option that you could try and do is buy them online. half.com is a good web page where you can get your textbooks for a relatively decent price.

I know in Ohio where I'm from you can order textbook through Ohiolink which is a website that is connected to all the Universities in Ohio and you can order them from any of the libraries and have them shipped to your college and pick them up for free. I believe you can check them out for four weeks at a time. If you use your one renew you can have that book for 8 weeks for free. I'm not sure if your state has this but I did it once for one of my books and it worked out great.

Blessings

Used books are much cheaper. You should buy used college textbooks at GreenTextbooks.com – Saving the Planet one Textbook at a Time GreenTextbooks.com is your online leader for finding used textbooks, DVDs, CDs. GreenTextbooks.com

Most students average a few hundred dollars to over a thousand if they are taking many science or medical classes. Always go for the used book they will save you almost half in some cases more on each book.
