Kodak ESP Office 2170 All-in-One Printer

Kodak’s ESP Office 2170 color inkjet multifunction printer (print, scan, copy, fax) aims at the home-office market, highlighting its affordable ink and its very economical purchase price ($150 as of 09/16/2011). unfortunately no perfect multifunction exists at this price point; the ESP Office 2170’s particular weaknesses are minimal features, slow performance, and mediocre output quality on plain paper.

To Kodak’s credit, the ESP Office 2170 is very easy to use. Installation via Wi-Fi or USB is straightforward, and the control panel’s labeled buttons are refreshing in their one-to-one functionality. The unit also features a readable, if small, 1.5-inch LCD screen. The software handles all multifunction chores ably.

Paper-handling features on the ESP Office 2170 are minimal. The only input is the vertical 150-sheet feed at the back of the unit, and duplex printing is manual only. The output tray pulls out the front of the unit and holds approximately 50 sheets. The flatbed scanner under the automatic document feeder (ADF) handles up to A4-size paper, but it does not telescope to accommodate thicker material. Duplex scanning via the 25-sheet ADF is not available, and we noticed on two different units that paper skewed slightly as it entered the ADF, making us wonder about the quality of the feed mechanism.

Performance is passable. The ESP Office 2170 printed simple text pages on plain paper at 4.7 pages per minute (ppm) on the PC and 3.7 ppm on the Mac—speeds well below the average for each platform. other speeds were right at the average for the category: 2 ppm printing color snapshots on the PC and 0.6 ppm printing a full-size color photo on the Mac; and 1.4 ppm printing a PDF document with a mix of text and color graphics on the Mac. Not surprisingly, photo quality on Kodak’s own glossy paper is superb: bright, crisp, and realistic. on the plain paper that most people use for most printing, however, text is dark gray rather than black and slightly soft; and images are dull-colored and grainy.

Kodak’s ink costs are very low. The standard-size cartridges include a $10, 335-page black cartridge and an $18, 275-page tricolor cartridge, amounting to about 3 cents per page for black and 6.5 cents for color. That makes the cost of your average four-color page a mere 9.5 cents. The high-capacity cartridges offer more yield but little savings: Black costs $20 and lasts 670 pages (3 cents per page), while color costs $34 and lasts 550 pages (6.2 cents per page). other models in this price range, such as the Canon Pixma MX420, tend to have higher ink costs.

The best way to look at the Kodak ESP Office 2170 is as a photo printer that also handles basic office chores in low volumes. if nothing else, its inexpensive inks make it far cheaper to operate than most others in its class. if you’re looking for a true office workhorse, however, it would be worthwhile to spend a little more money up front for a better all-around model like the Epson WorkForce 635.

Is it true if you use non HP inkjet cartridge, you'll ruin your printer because …?

the head of the cartridge (?) needs to be cleaned each time and the non HP cartridge (like office depot brand) doesn't come with cleaned head? That was what I was told.

High Time you tried and seen for self

– happy printing !

a load of rubbish, use compatiables and save money, where do you think that rumour came from.
wouldn't you if you made ink for your printer model and people started to use cheaper inks.
hhhmmmmmm…………. I wonder who started this rumour….

How do i reset ink cartridges myself?

I have an Epson stylus c-82 printer, and i've refilled the ink cartridges. How do i reset the cartridges myself without buying the so called box to reset it?

I recently dumped a C82.
Don't know what you mean by the "box" to reset it.
Epson provided a User's Guide on the installation CD which tells you how to install ink cartridges.

Epson will probably detect that it is not Epson ink and give you a hard time. If it does, try to reset it this way:
>>>remove all cartridges and set them on a wet paper towel so they don't dry out
>>>disconnect from computer or in back of printer
>>>unplug AC
Wait a minute
now, reconnect to computer, AC, and reinstall cartridges.

If it still doesn't work, contact Epson and hope your printer is still under warranty.

Your Refrigerator. Do you prefer ice trays or a ice maker?

I prefer ice trays. the ice maker makes a mess everytime I try to get ice.

I prefer ice-maker. I hate filling up ice trays and they seem to make such a mess by the time you finally get them into the freezer. Have you tried just using an ice scooper (you can get them at restaurant supply stores). if your dispenser is messy or you don;t have one, this is a simple solution to getting the ice out and neatly into a glass.

Ice maker. It's a pain in the butt to have to constantly break out ice and refill the trays. I have a fridge with an ice maker and the water and ice dispenser in the door. It's sweet.

i like the ice maker…that way i don't have to try to get the ice cubes out of the tray everytime, or worry about refilling them up with water.

Ice maker is quick and easy–you don't have to really do anything. Our ice maker is broken right now, so we have to use ice trays.

Interesting opinion, though.

Ice maker there is something wrong with your ice maker, the cube are to drop in the tray, and you just take out what you want.

Ice trays. They can be thoroughly cleaned much more frequently then an ice maker can be. Therefore they are less likely to be unsanitary.

Ice maker… the stupid ice trays crack and then its hard to get them out and then the ice dumps out on the ground and ugh! they are just stupid. Ice maekers do it all for you!

ice maker it is more convinent
mostly because when it was summer and we did not fill up the ice tray we would not be able 2 watch tv all day if ur in the ghetto and think uu r going 2 get shot when u go outside all u have 2 do is watch tv inside

I really don't know I like both
because the ice maker makes them like every hour but then they're is no ice if its all used up

And the ice trays they're good because they freeze faster but i dont like to keep fillinf them up

ice trays. The ice maker uses water that tastes horrible. at least with trays, you control which water to use.

i like the ice maker on the outside of the fridge..the ones inside take up to much room, and ice trays make the ice take like freezer….

ice trays, ive had a line bust 2 an ice maker before and man what a mess….plus, the kool aid on an ice pick pops for late night cheap munchies cant be made in the ice maker.

Unfortunately, Ice trays!

yeah i agree with you, i use ice trays, i don't even know how to use a ice makers hehe :)

Ice maker. if I have ice trays then I never have ice because I'm too lazy to keep them filled.

Ice maker
Our fridge uses filter water and ice is always available.

am comfortable with ice trays

ice trays. The ice makers go on the fritz.

Ice maker, it would be hell trying to get the cubes out of the tray.

ice trays…my dogs push on the ice maker and get the ice all over the floor

i have ice trays but i prefer ice maker

Ice Maker…

Crushed ice makes me happy.

ICEMAKER!

=]

trays are too much of a hassle.

ice maker
i have an S.O. that would refuse to refill the ice trays….

Westlake Ace Hardware signs deal with Ink-O-Dem

With a nod toward sustainability, Lenexa, Kan.-based Westlake Ace Hardware will offer an inkjet cartridge refilling service at six stores.

Through a partnership with Ink-O-Dem, the 88-store retail chain said it intends to increase its focus on sustainability. "Adding Ink-O-Dem’s ink cartridge refilling service just makes perfect sense as it is convenient, green and affordable," said Boyd White, corporate merchant of Westlake Ace Hardware. "We will have this new service in six of our Olathe, Lawrence and Topeka, Kan., area stores initially and plan to expand the rollout from there."

The service begins Aug. 8. Participating stores can now refill 146 different inkjet cartridges, including the latest cartridges from HP and Canon.

In a press release announcing the move, Ink-O-Dem pointed to research from Lyra Research that showed more than 1 million inkjet cartridges are thrown into landfills every day, adding 60,000 tons of industrial grade plastic to landfills each year.

The cartride refill service is also available at Cartridge World, Hi-School Pharmacy, Walgreens and other major chains, according to Ink-O-Dem.

Westlake Ace Hardware was the Home Channel News 2011 Golden Hammer Retailer of the Year honoree.

Apple releases printer driver and QuickTime 7.7 updates

Apple has released driver updates to supply additional support for printer and scanner devices from HP, Samsung, and Brother. These updates are for OS X 10.6 and include all the printer drivers supported on OS X from the respective companies. Apple uses its Common Unix Printing system (CUPS) in OS X, that uses generic driver sets that are enhanced to support specific features and functions of individual printer models, so as new models come out Apple can more easily tweak drivers to work with them. The latest printer drivers can be found at the following locations:

HP Printer Drivers v.2.7 for Mac OS X v10.6

Samsung Printer Drivers v2.2 for Mac OS X v10.6

Brother 2.7 Printer Drivers for Mac OS X v10.6

As with all printer updates, if your printer is working fine then there is no need to update the driver. It is very likely that Apple has not offered any new features to existing drivers, so updating will only alter your current configuration and increase the possibility that something will go wrong. Additionally, if your printer driver needs updating, a smaller and tailored version of the download will be available to you via Software Update, so it may be best to check Software Update first. Installing the downloadable updates in the links above will install all the included drivers, most of which you may never use. if in the future you need a driver, then OS X will automatically download it when you install the printer.

Beside driver updates, Apple has issued an update for QuickTime inOS X Leopard, which brings the version to 7.7. this update requires OS X 10.5 or later and is a ~69MB download through Software Update. unfortunately while Apple’s support downloads site lists the update, the linked downloads pages for the new software points to the older 7.6.9 update so we cannot yet link to it from here. Apple’s security updates page mentions that the update mainly is for security to prevent the execution of arbitrary code in specific situations when handling media with the QuickTime program.

Do you use refill ink ( not original ) cartridges in your photo printer ?

I use refill ink for an inkjet printer for document printing. I noticed that the print-out gets smudged when wet.

Is it advisable to use dye based refill ink in photo printers to print photos ?

Thank you.

I use original ink in my HP All-in-one unit; sometimes refills don't connect all the contact points…and it does smudge easier.

I can't answer about photo printers; but again…I don't think I'd want to use a refill. (I'm pretty picky when I print things.)

How long after the expiration date are HP ink cartridges usable for?

I have a few HP ink cartridges that have expired in December 2005, August 2007, and October 2007. are these still usuable? Please let me know! Thank you!

If they are still taped, they shouldnt have dried out. If they have been used before, they are probably clogged……tryem out

It is not like food in that it will harm you if you use them. Insert them into your printer and see if they work.
Honestly I'm sure HP wants you to toss them and go spend some $$ on new ones, but if they put ink to paper then they may be good for another 10 years.

Where is the cheapest place online to buy colored inkjet cartridges for Dell printers?

I have a Dell 725 Printer, and buying directly from dell is expensive!!!

you can buy refurbished cartridges at officemax and probably staples and office depot as well, but dell printers aren't worth buying the cartridges for, go out and buy a HP they're alot higher quality printers.

Hello
@ answer ur question and NOT dance arround, u may want 2 try Ebay. Ive found it 2 be the most cheapest place 2 find original and replacement ink cartridges…
Good Luck

I used to sell Dell Computers….. it is the downside of their printers. The cartridges are supposed to last longer though. I know they started selling them at Staples…. but don't know how much they are. you can try e-bay….. you never know.

What brand of printer uses the cheapest ink cartridges?

Most cheap inkjet printers will have cheap ink. I find HP and Canon to be the cheapest. Lexmark and Epson tend to be a little over-priced. but all inks quite expensive for what it is, that's how manufacturers make their money.

You could always get 3rd party cartridges which often work just as well.

Hope this helps,
Dan

i use a brother printer, the cartridges i buy are £3 each so it costs me 12 a time to buy all 4.

Kodak Easy Share all in one printers. $25 for a full set of branded cartridges.
