There are many places that will rebuild batteries at a fraction of the cost of a new one. look in the Yellow Pages for companies in your area.

heard something about cleaning them up internally with a welder, supposed to burn off the stuff that keeps them from recharging. not that i'd try it, but you may want to try and track that on down.
There is such a thing as battery memory and until you asked the question I didn't know much about it. I searched and found some information about it. There was such a thing as memory affect (voltage depression) with NiCad batteries but that has become a thing of the past in the last five years. The site indicated to never completely deplete a battery before recharging but to recharge it after it gets down to about 1 volt. It said to correct a voltage depression problem charge the battery to full capacity and discharge it. You might want to read what it has to say.
