Hey I finished making an independent film, how do I show it to production companies? do I call them?
I think you mean show it to distributors, not production companies. First, you need to prove it is marketable and has an audience. if you cannot show that yet, you'll have to start working on building a following.
You should check out these books for your next steps. This is going to be a long haul, don't expect immediate sales. it could take years, and I am not kidding. Be careful of signing with anyone, especially if they want you to pay them to rep your film. you have only just begun this process, finishing the film is almost nothing compared to what you will go through to get people to watch it.

I know many people in the scene with lots of knowledge
Production companies dont buy film they make 'em.
enter it into as many film festivals you can – even prestigous ones if possible. if you win anything make it part of your portfolio and send it as part of your resume when apply for. Go to the film festival, network and sell yourself and you piece. Sometimes you may get approached for a job based on your attitude and film alone.
If it's really good AND marketable to a home audience – then a distributor will approach you and ask for rights to sell it. if this happens, GET AN AGENT first. get the best deal you can – which wont be much.
Then take a break, congratulate and enjoyyourself when it's over. RElax. now go make another, better, film..
