Like everything else, in the last 20 years Vacation Bible School has undergone a transformation from overhead projectors, transparencies and slides to multimedia projection systems, videos and music with a beat. the themes this year range from Big Apple Adventure in New York to stock car racing to a bamboo forest.
The high-tech approach creates excitement as children learn new songs, make craft projects or play games in recreation. the memories last a lifetime. the Star asked Facebook readers to share their Vacation Bible School memories and Phyllis Woods Mosteller said one of her best memories was learning a song in sign language.
“I taught a class of teenagers and we all got it down as we should,” Mosteller wrote. “the church seemed to enjoy it as well.”
Christopher Evans said he remembered riding with his Dad in their dune buggy in the VBS parade.
David D. Jones said his favorite memory was surprising his son.
“last year, my son was at my sister’s house for a week for VBS. the week before he had been at his grandparents’ house. I had not seen him for over two weeks. He thought that my wife and I were going to pick him up on Saturday. we surprised him by showing up for the VBS Family Night on Friday night,” Jones wrote. “the service had already started when we got there. we walked in and he was up on the platform singing the theme song and doing the hand motions. we had been there a few minutes and he finally saw us. the excitement on his face was priceless and created a great memory for me.”
