Teagarden earns promotion, Tucker optioned

KANSAS CITY — With Interleague games on the horizon, the Rangers are going with one more position player and one less pitcher. Hot-hitting catcher Taylor Teagarden was recalled from Triple-A round Rock on Wednesday with right-hander Ryan Tucker being optioned to the Express.

Teagarden was hitting .341 with seven homers and 14 RBIs over 13 games at round Rock. After a stint with the Rangers from April 20-May 5, he arrived back in Triple-A with a big bang as he hit three homers and had seven runs batted in on May 8 against Nashville.

“It was my first game back there after not playing much in the big leagues. I got some pitches to hit and the momentum started building after the first inning,” Teagarden said.

“It was a fun day for me. I’ve never had an offensive day like that. That really helped me get it going for what has happened the last couple of weeks.”

Teagarden said that with each trip back to the Rangers, the comfort level rises.

“I know these guys and have played with the majority of them the last three years,” Teagarden said. “The confidence is very high here and the more I’m around the Major League atmosphere, the more comfortable I get. you realize it’s just baseball. Go out and have fun and don’t try to make too much of it.”

Rangers manager Ron Washington welcomed Teagarden back with a simple message.

“He just said to stay fresh, have fun and be ready,” Teagarden said.

Tucker allowed five runs (four earned) over a span of five innings in five games for the Rangers. he hadn’t pitched since May 9.

The Rangers now have 12 pitchers on their Major League roster and Washington said he likes that number going forward.

“Hopefully, we can get this pitching straightened out where we don’t have to carry all those pitchers and can go to a normal roster,” the skipper said.

Moreland returns to lineup as designated hitter

KANSAS CITY — Mitch Moreland returned to the Rangers’ lineup on Wednesday night, but only as the designated hitter.

Moreland had missed three starts because of a sore left hamstring and manager Ron Washington chose to ease him back into action. Michael Young started against the Royals at first base.

“His first time out there, I didn’t want to put him in the outfield, so I DH’d him,” Washington said. “I wanted Michael to play first base tonight.”

Washington reiterated that Moreland had “passed the test” in Chicago on Tuesday with regards to the hamstring and is fully available.
