A question about toiletries and air travel?

Okay so I am flying on Southwest Airlines. I always pack a carryon to escape the possibility of lost luggage.

So apparently I have to put all of my toiletries into clear bottles under 3.5 ounces and put them in a one quart ziplock bag.

My question is- do I have to put my makeup in that bag too?

you're talking about TSA's 3-1-1 rule that applies to all liquids or gels. if your makeup is really anything except a powder, it needs to be under. also, the TSA likes it when you put all the small plastic bottles into one zip lock bag for easy inspection. Just a tip to get through the line faster.

Explore the specifics at tsa.gov

Firstly, you don't have to decant liquids into clear bottles, they are best being left in their original packaging. what matters is the size, ie. no larger than 100ml or 3.4 fl oz. You need to put anything that is a liquid in to the ziplock bag.

As others have said, the make up need to put into the clear plastic bag only if it's a liquid or a gel, and the limit is 3.4 oz., here's the TSA rules on liquids and gels:

Only liquid makeup is necessary, but you can put the rest if you choose.

Might as well – the clear bag will go thru the xray machine by itself

Only if your make up is a liquid.

Pack a better suitcase

Are you one of those travelers who insist on stuffing your suitcase to the point of having to sit on it to close it?

“Knowing how to pack efficiently, and what the latest security rules are, will help you learn to make the most of what you take on vacation,” said Bonnie Dittman, regional manager of AAA North Penn in Stroudsburg.

She should know, because she teaches AAA’s how-to-pack seminars. Here is how the pros pack:

1. Spread a plastic dry-cleaner bag in the bottom of the suitcase to protect items inside the suitcase from moisture or water.

2. in the bottom of the suitcase, place a toiletry kit, steamer, personal door alarm and a compression bag for wet bathing suits or underwear. also shoes, with socks, ties and other small items stuffed inside the shoes.

3. Next, to create a flat packing surface, use a packing board or a piece of corrugated cardboard cut to size, and place over the items into the suitcase.

4. Lay pants lengthwise in the suitcase with the waistband to the left side and pant legs over the side of the suitcase. place the next pair of with the waistband to the left side of suitcase.

5. Lay skirts and long dresses on the third side of suitcase.

6. Men’s suits, shirts and jackets should be completely buttoned and all zippers zipped. Put the shirts inside of any dress jackets you are packing.

7. Roll polyester-type tops, pajamas and other clothing items that can be rolled, and place them in the suitcase.

8. Fold legs of pants and skirts in on top of rolled items.

9. finish by spreading a second dry-cleaning bag on top of the packed items.

10. Close suitcase and fasten any belts around the suitcase.
