i am trying to find a very deep waist high unfinished bookcase to use as a changing table. anyone know where i can find one?
please don't use a book case…baby changing tables are made with safety standards so they can't tip over,a book shelf is not…
I definitely understand your wanting to be functional! I think a bookshelf is a great idea (we love books and are always in need of a new bookshelf!) Most of them now come with the safety strap to nail it to the wall so tipping shouldn't be a problem. you can find the changing table pad/mattress at BabiesRUs to be able to further secure your baby. Great thinking outside of the box! when our baby was a newborn, we used the bassinet in the Pack'N'Play…after that we used (and still use!) the FLOOR!
We had a changing table that we never used. if you are getting a newer pack and play, that will have a changing pad. Otherwise we just had little plasticy pad things we used on the floor. We werent about to go from room to room to change the baby.
Sorry, bookshelves are not sturdy enough and can tip. Use a low dresser or buy a changing table. I plan to just use my regular dresser. Nothing to buy – I can make pads.
We got ours at IKEA.
And to the other responder … naw. if you live in earthquake country, you will want to get a wall strap anyway. but really, like most baby gear, changing tables are just a scam …the companies want you to spend a fortune on single-use crap, when you really don't need anything special for babies. Get a dresser you can use later as …a dresser.
