When I check the Network and sharing center, it says my laptop is connecting to the network, but no connection to internet. see below:
access : Local only
Connetion : Wireless network connection (my_linksys)
signal strength: Excellent.
I did diagnostics, it says " There may be a problem with your Domain name server (DNS) configuration".
however, my other 2 laptops which run on winXP can connect to internet without issue. anybody out there can help?
Click open your start menu one of the working laptops then type in "command"
When the command window opens, type in "ip config/all"
Scroll down to the DNS settings and copy them out.
Go to the vista laptop and type in the network connections values manually to match.

we have internet ADSL through the above modem.we have an ADSL modem and an ADSL router.now we want to connect two computers through the ADSL router and allowing internet to a second computer.
You have a choice between two:
-You create a PPPoE from the first computer? in this case you can connect the first computer to the internet, and from the netwrok connection, you click right to change properties of the PPPoE connection, and then you chose advanced and click share connection. in this case you need a second network adapter to connect the second computer.
-If you are not using a PPPoE, or may be you are using it and you want to desable it, you can connect to the modem and disable it (you can learn it from the modem manual, it's depands on modems).
In this case you can use a small HUB or a SWITCH to connect the modem, the first and the second computer. and you will connect automatically to internet.
Try to find on the modem of the DHCP service is enabled, if not enable it with defaut parameters.
If you have the first computer hooked up to the internet through the router, and are having no problems; then hooking up the second computer is rather easy. Just follow a couple of simple steps, and make a couple of decisions.
1) do you want to have a hard wire connection to the second computer, which requires stringing a wire between the router location and the second computer? Or do you want to connect the second computer wirelessly so that no cable is required between the router and the computer?
2) if you are wanting a hardwire connection – then you need to check the back of the router and see if there are multiple jacks for LAN connections. most have at least 4 connections for LAN cables. You will need to replace the router if you do not have the extra connection ports, or go wireless if the router has that capability. Assuming you have the ports, you would need to run a wire from the location of the router, to the location of the second computer. this can be done by either having the cable installed with jacks in the wall at both locations (best done by a professionals if you have any doubts about your ability). Or you can run the cable along the baseboards of your room or through the basement area.
3) now connect the cable at both ends and use the Network wizard in Windows to configure the new computer. You will need to check the workgroup that each machine is assigned to if you want to share files between the computers. (Go to Start – Control Panel – system – Click on the tab that says Computer name. The workgroup is listed in the center of the page. IF they do not match – you can click the change button on one of the machines to change it to match the other.)
4) if you want a wireless connection to the second machine. You need to either have a wireless router (It will likely have a small antenna on it); or you will have to purchase an access point or a new router to replace the old one. if your current router has wireless capability, then you can install either a wireless card into the second computer, or add a USB wireless adapter to the second computer. The USB option is the easiest. Purchase the USB adapter – install the software for the adapter (this must almost always be done before you plug the adapter into the computer) – plug in the adapter – follow the simple steps to set up the adapter and configure your security settings..
5) if you do not have wireless capabilities in your current router. You can either replace the router with a wireless enabled unit, or you can buy an access point. There are several out on the market that would connect to one of the LAN ports on the back of the router, and would provide the wireless transmitter to connect to a wireless card or USB adapter in the second computer.
I have personally used this adapter and it worked flawlessly, and was rather easy to use with step by step directions. It is also very small for its power and would be easy to place near the existing router.

If you go with a wireless solution – be certain you set up the encryption security on the wireless net. Otherwise, neighbors and/or strangers that are within the range of the signal will be able to access your internet connections, and/or you files.
I thought you could just connect the Ethernet cable to the wi_fi but this does not work. Silver Surfer
