I am running ethernet cables through an attic that is about 220 ft. long. These cables are to replace some cable that got broken whenever the techs who installed our new server rack and moved our switches through the wall. I have already run two of these cables and terminated them at either end and they work fine.

However I am a little bit short on cable for the final run and was wondering if there is an easy way to couple two of the broken cables together (before the actual breaks, which I verified by toning out all 8 wires). I don't mind buying an RJ45 to RJ45 adapter if needed but I had a few at the house that I tried using and they didn't work (I think the pull of the cable when being lifted up to zip ties that hold all of our cables pulled the connectors just enough that the pins weren't making contact with the coupler). The electrician mention something about a coupler that you could use on the twisted pairs themselves.

Does anyone know of a good coupler that I can buy locally (don't have time to wait for online) that will hold the cables very firmly or a way to couple the actual twisted pairs themselves (and then heatshrink for longevity)?

yes you should be able to pick up a coupling at a local electronics or hardware store. worst comes to worst you can rig your own with a short piece of cable and two female terminations but the tools to do it will cost about $30

Is this for fast ethernet or gigabit ethernet? if gigabit, I'd run new wires. if fast (100Mbps) ethernet, you can find Category 5 couplers for $1 on Amazon.

Below is a link for a cat 5 coupler that sells for $ 3.85. It is online but you might find a coupler at a local Radio Shack or an electronics store.

Yes it is possible to couple CAT5e twisted pair cables. however, if you want a quick and inexpensive repair, the easiest thing to do is simply put a male connector (RJ45) on one end and a punch down block on the end of your new longer patch cable (so to speak). It won't be as good as a single unspliced cable but I doubt very much that you'll notice any appreciable strength or speed depreciation. You can go to Home Depot and buy a punch down kit for about 20 bucks that will have every item and tool you'd need to do this. there is no specific color scheme required for you, provided that you MATCH both ends with similar colored wires on each end of your new splice. some color punch down schemes (AT&T's for instance) place the middle pair (green solid, green white) split in the middle with the blue pair between each of them. So Orange/White, Orange, Green/White, Blue, Blue/White, Green, Brown/White, Brown… etc would do just fine. Heatshrinking the connection after you are completed is a nice touch, and helps to prevent any inadvertent stress and strain on the cable from gradually unseating your connections.

I liked some of the punches, but I feel like you need stronger multis for this type of track…Tha Prince was good, but M.thought could have stepped it up a bit…

How far can I go with a Category 5E UTP cable for a gigabit network?
A 16 meter (53 feet) cable ran only at 100Mb/s, whereas a similar patch cable of 2 meter ran at 1Gb/s.
Do I need to upgrade to category 6?

Chances are you have a bad cable. All Category's of cabling (Ethernet) are limited to 100 Meters or 328 feet (no more than 4 termination points) with the exception of cat3 (only for analog telephone wiring) can run miles. Cat5E is spec'ed to run @ 10/100/1000 or up to one Gig speed. Cat6 is really Cat5E. so I'd check that 53 foot cable because something is wrong with it.

If there are any sharp bends or excessive twist in the cable, damage or crimped then it will not have the performance you desire.

Oh… and UTP simply means Unshielded Twisted Pairs.
If your talking about Cat7 then it will be STP. Shielded Twisted Pair. this Category is used for 10 Gig connections. All pairs are shielded and have to be grounded. Super fast stuff.
