AS peak high-heel injury season draws near, health professionals are warning fashionable fillies to tread carefully.
With sky-highs ruling the catwalks, the Spring Racing Carnival here and Christmas party season around the corner, medics are bracing themselves for high-heel hell.
A quarter of serious high-heel injuries in Victoria occur in the months of November and December.
And experts say the long-term damage caused by high heels is being seen in younger women than ever, as they start wearing higher heels earlier, more often and for longer.
Australasian Podiatry Council spokesman Brenden Brown said: "Champagne and heels – the two should never mix, but they do, all the time."
His tip for trackside – or any less stable surface – was for women to opt for lower wedge heels.
Chiropractors’ Association of Australia spokeswoman Dr Helen Alevaki said high heels dramatically increased the risk of falls.
Monash Accident Research Centre figures reveal more than 240 patients have been treated at Victorian hospital emergency departments for injuries from wearing high heels in the past five years.
Most were falls causing sprains, strains and breaks to the ankle or foot.
Most prone to injury were women aged 20-24, followed by the 25-29 age group.
But Dr Alevaki said she was more concerned about the long-term effects of wearing heels.
"we are seeing young women in their late teens and early 20s with degenerative changes to their spine, which used to only be seen in women in their 40s," she said.
Tips to minimise the harm of high heels:
* Select shoes that fit properly — allow a finger width of space between toes and the end of the shoe
* Select a wider heel rather than a narrower one, or even a wedge
* Choose heels that evenly distribute your weight, from your heel to the ball of your foot
* Limit standing time, sitting where possible
* take a pair of flats to walk in
* do feet strengthening exercises, such as picking marbles up with your toes

I am a senior Biology major/Chem minor and trying to decide what to pursue after academics. I have narrowed (though not so narrow) my options down to -
1) Nursing school to pursue a career as a Nursing Anesthist
2) Getting a civil service job
3) Graduate school
and maybe just MAYBE once, I have lived a little, and experienced the professional world, I may reconsider the obtion of going to medschool (as I originally chose my major with the goal to do Gynecology).
So, right now, I am kind of at a stand still. If I go to graduate school or do further training (which i am currently mostly interested in), what fields are there to look into?
I am mostly trying to decide what field peaks my interest the most. I was considering Bioinformatics but I know that deals with a lot of genetics, and I'm not exactly a fan of that. I do not know specifically what fields I like, but generally I…
Dislike:
– Genetics
– Botany
– Molecular Biology
– Podiatry
– Gerentology
– Chiropractics
– Prosthetics
Like:
– Pediatrics
– Public Health/Social Work
– Microbiology
– HIV/Aids related fields
– General Practicioner type work
– i truly don't mind Immunology, Human Anatomy, Forensics, or Biotech Methods
Academically, I do not have the best GPA (3.006 ***.), but I do not mind taking a year or two off to improve my resume. My best courses (academically speaking only) were: first Aid & Safety, Organic Chem, and Human Physiology.
This is VERY important to me because I want to find a career in a field that I truly have an interest in. or even, if you do not know any fields to pursue, where can I find a pretty well composed lists of medical career venues? even some type of medical aptitude test would be awesome!
You have a serious problem with a degree in Biology. If you stop with an undergrad degree, your career choices are basically:
* Cleaning lab monkey cages
* Counting worms in fish guts
Your GPA precludes any serious chance at grad school or the medical professions.
You should consider returning for a couple of years to get a 2nd degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology.
