Mole rat dental structure similar to a shark

(PhysOrg.com) — Sharks are capable of continually growing new teeth. as the teeth age, they fall out and new ones move forward similar to that of a tooth conveyor belt. Humans, and most mammals, on the other hand are only given two sets of teeth and must make them last. however, researchers have found there are exceptions to this rule and a new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows that the silvery mole rat is one of the exceptions.

It was first noted by Stuart Landry back in 1957 that these moles had more molars than the average rodent, but it was never investigated further. that is until Helder Gomes Rodrigues from the University of Lyon began this current study.

For this study, Rodrigues looked at the skeletal remains of some 55 mole rats and discovered that the molars at the back of these rodent’s jaws seem to move forward. as they move forward, they erupt upward and are worn down through normal wear and tear. By the time a molar reaches the front molar row, they have been completely eroded and seem to be absorbed back into the jawbone.

The only other mammals with this similar ability to make more teeth are three different manatee species and a pygmy-rock wallaby. however, the mole rat seems to be the only one that has the set-up where the teeth move forward and upward. The other mammals have molars that sprout up, move to the front and fall out, similar to human baby teeth.

While it is believed that the manatee and wallaby have evolved to replace teeth due to the hard elements in their diet, the mole rat feeds on soft tubers and plants. Rodrigues believes that an explanation for this evolution to replacing molars in the mole rat may have something to do with digging rather than eating. While they primarily dig with their front incisors, they grind things with their molars and swallow abrasive dust. however this is still just a theory and the real reason behind this evolution of multiple molars still remains a mystery.

More information: Continuous dental replacement in a hyper-chisel tooth digging rodent, PNAS, Published online before print October 10, 2011, doi: 10.1073/pnas.1109615108

Abstract Contrary to their reptilian ancestors, which had numerous dental generations, mammals are known to usually develop only two generations of teeth. however, a few mammal species have acquired the ability to continuously replace their dentition by the constant addition of supernumerary teeth moving secondarily toward the front of the jaw. The resulting treadmill-like replacement is thus horizontal, and differs completely from the vertical dental succession of other mammals and their extinct relatives. despite the developmental implications and prospects regarding the origin of supernumerary teeth, this striking innovation remains poorly documented. Here we report another case of continuous dental replacement in an African rodent, Heliophobius argenteocinereus, which combines this dental system with the progressive eruption of high-crowned teeth. The escalator-like mechanism of Heliophobius constitutes an original adaptation to hyper-chisel tooth digging involving high dental wear. Comparisons between Heliophobius and the few mammals that convergently acquired continuous dental replacement reveal that shared inherited traits, including dental mesial drift, delayed eruption, and supernumerary molars, comprise essential prerequisites to setting up this dental mechanism. Interestingly, these dental traits are present to a lesser extent in humans but are absent in mouse, the usual biological model. Consequently, Heliophobius represents a suitable model to investigate the molecular processes leading to the development of supernumerary teeth in mammals, and the accurate description of these processes could be a significant advance for further applications in humans, such as the regeneration of dental tissues.

Major Retailers Threaten to Blow Off Steam Supported Games

“Nowadays bricks and mortar retail stores dont cater to pc gamers anyhow. Go into any HMV, Gamestop et al, and you will see how PC games have been relegated to the bargain buy carousel. my local gamestop store has about 45% one side of store xbox games and accessories, 45% the other side ps3 games and accessories, 5% takes up the counter, 4% used dvds/blu rays and 1% pc games in a carousel that dont stock major releases, whose decision was that? Tbh its their own fault, I have had no choice but to go a digital distributor for my pc games. Steam is the perfect solution with all the benefits as mentioned above. Its a little too late for them wanting a slice of the pc gaming market pie. and good luck to them with their own digital distribution platforms, steam is already well established and is number 1 for a good reason. GFWL is an example of a platform that is established, yet doesnt work for pc games, visit the forums of any games that has had it attached and you’ll seen see the complaints, indeed many developers have ditched GFWL because of this – take Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas as an example, Fallout 3 had GFWL attached and had no end of problems, FNV was just recently released – but with integrated steamworks instead. Publishers and developers already know that steam works, and makes more profit for them than tangible pc dvd boxes, no way they will sacrifice this golden goose. So any attempts at their own digital platforms will fail, the bricks and mortar stores will continue to stock budget buy bargain bin games, developers and publishers will still make console games for these stores and sell them by the bucket load, and proper pc gamers will smile and keep on gaming with steam, knowing they have the best deals (publisher and holiday specials and sales), regular updates automatically, support forums, free DLCs (for some games), integrated chat, games available on launch days, purchase games whenever you want (albeit will a small delay to download). Steam wins.”

a NEWPORT woman who suffers from a painful pelvic condition is taking a campaign to raise awareness of it global, with a regular slot on a US online radio show.

Danielle Bevan-Jones, 23, of Caerleon Road, was contacted by Hollywood actress Elizabeth Oas, who also suffers from endometriosis, after Ms Oas had seen a video the University of Wales, Newport, student had created about living with it.

miss Bevan-Jones, who was diagnosed with the incurable condition in January 2010, now appears on the online radio show the Pelvic Messenger once every few months.

Endometriosis, which affects one in ten women, occurs when the lining of the womb grows in other areas outside of the womb and can lead to some women feeling pain so excruciating it feels like they are in labour.

miss Bevan-Jones decided she wanted to raise awareness of the condition after first going to the doctors in November 2007 with what she thought were bad period pains.

After seeing six doctors and being referred to two psychotherapists, she finally underwent a laparoscopy at the Royal Gwent Hospital, leading to the diagnosis.

although she underwent six months of chemical menopause treatment, there is no specific treatment available to cure the condition.

This leaves her suffering in pain for around 25 days each month and some days she is unable to get out of bed.

Wanting to help others like her, miss Bevan-Jones, a documentary, film and television student, decided to start making the film. After putting her film ‘myendowhat’ on YouTube, she also has had a national radio appearance and been on a phone-in to the Lorraine Kelly Show.

she also has a fundraising page atjustgiving.com/ Danielle-Bevan-Jones and has now been appointed as a trustee for the Endometriosis SHE Trust UK.

she said: “I just realised that something needed to be done about the lack of Endo awareness and funding.”

Kicking up heels a risk to health

AS peak high-heel injury season draws near, health professionals are warning fashionable fillies to tread carefully.

With sky-highs ruling the catwalks, the Spring Racing Carnival here and Christmas party season around the corner, medics are bracing themselves for high-heel hell.

A quarter of serious high-heel injuries in Victoria occur in the months of November and December.

And experts say the long-term damage caused by high heels is being seen in younger women than ever, as they start wearing higher heels earlier, more often and for longer.

Australasian Podiatry Council spokesman Brenden Brown said: "Champagne and heels – the two should never mix, but they do, all the time."

His tip for trackside – or any less stable surface – was for women to opt for lower wedge heels.

Chiropractors’ Association of Australia spokeswoman Dr Helen Alevaki said high heels dramatically increased the risk of falls.

Monash Accident Research Centre figures reveal more than 240 patients have been treated at Victorian hospital emergency departments for injuries from wearing high heels in the past five years.

Most were falls causing sprains, strains and breaks to the ankle or foot.

Most prone to injury were women aged 20-24, followed by the 25-29 age group.

But Dr Alevaki said she was more concerned about the long-term effects of wearing heels.

"we are seeing young women in their late teens and early 20s with degenerative changes to their spine, which used to only be seen in women in their 40s," she said.

Tips to minimise the harm of high heels:

* Select shoes that fit properly — allow a finger width of space between toes and the end of the shoe

* Select a wider heel rather than a narrower one, or even a wedge

* Choose heels that evenly distribute your weight, from your heel to the ball of your foot

* Limit standing time, sitting where possible

* take a pair of flats to walk in

* do feet strengthening exercises, such as picking marbles up with your toes

In Mirpurkhas, Rs10 is the fare for a donkey cart ride between life and death – The Express Tribune

The hospital compound is submerged in five feet of water, ambulances have stopped working and the only mode of transport inside is donkey carts. PHOTO: ZEESHAN KHAN/EXPRESS

MIRPURKHAS:

Civil Hospital, Mirpurkhas, and the doctors’ residential quarters that surround it, are a bizarre archipelago in a 13-acre sea of rainwater.

Gulab, a resident of the Digri Tehsil waded through torrents of floodwater to get to the hospital located in the centre of Mirpurkhas City bearing his six-year-old daughter suffering from pneumonia.

Upon reaching the gate, he hired a donkey cart waiting there in order to cross a moat of rain, river and sewerage water only to be told that the hospital is unable to treat chest congestion and he would have to take her to Hyderabad, Lal Batti, instead.

From the main gate to the hospital, the water stands at about five feet, while the floor of the hospital is hidden under a layer of muck.

The ambulances gave way as water soaked into their engines.

A makeshift ramp has been constructed for stretchers and gurneys and a pair of donkey carts have been hired by the hospital to transport their staff inside. The patients, on the other hand, have to pay Rs10 per head for each trip to and from the gate and the hospital. Critical patients – particularly those with heart problems – do not survive the bumpy trip.

Though it is the district’s civil hospital, people from the Tharparkar, Sanghar, Umarkot, Mirpurkhas and Tando Allahyar districts all travel here and about 3,000 patients are treated daily.

Gulab was turned away from the last functioning ward of the hospital that housed a total of 100 people – doctors included.

There are about 1.5 million people living in Mirpurkhas district alone. like Gulab’s daughter, the majority of patients have to be turned away because the hospital’s supply of medicines and technology has severely been affected. others simply cannot stomach the filth that fills the wards.

Nearby, there is an area known as new Town where there are about six private medical centres. The queues outside these clinics are longer than those outside ration distribution centres as people line up, prepared to pay private bills for medical attention.

Strangely enough, the road outside is not flooded – roughly 20 days after the rains stopped, only the hospital compound remains flooded. It is one of the areas, including Mirpurkhas, Digri, Diplo and Sanghar, where water remains.

Efforts to drain the civil hospital in Sanghar have been abandoned altogether and an emergency centre in an adjoining shop has been setup to help patients in need of urgent medical care.

Meanwhile, the Mirpurkhas hospital management, taluka municipal administration and district management are too busy pushing the responsibility of draining the hospital off on each other to actually make any headway towards getting the water out.

Their homes flooded and belongings destroyed, even the paramedics and doctors living in the hospital compound have shifted away. Probably the only upside is that the electricity supply is still up and, during load-shedding, the hospital generators are also functioning. not to be overlooked either is the dedication of the doctors who wait at the gate for patients, working with what little they have.

In the days that have passed since the water flowed down from the saltwater drain to the left of the district, sewerage from the hospital has mixed into the water. The doctors say that the sanitation problem is so bad that they are not even sure what kind of diseases are spreading in the hospital. The most common complaints, after gastroenteritis and malaria, are skin diseases. Swimming through the stew of sewerage, rainwater and mud are fish weighing up to 200 grammes. According to social worker Kanji Dheel, the situation is worsened by certain influential landlords who are draining their agricultural lands and sending the water towards Mirpurkhas City.
