How do I send a fax on a lexmark p3150?

I have never sent a fax before. I need to send some stuff to my college for financial aid and I am having trouble with my fax machine. it is a lexmark printtrio photo p3150 and it is an all in one machine. I looked in the manual online and it says "DSL (digital subscriber line), ISDN (integrated services digital network) and cable modems are not fax modems and are not supported." I don't understand, do I need another modem? I have DSL, the printer/fax machine hooks to a usb port. it is set up correctly according to the manual. The scanner and everything works, I just keep getting a message saying no dial tone when I try to send the fax.

You will need a fax modem installed on your computer and an analog phone signal to use the fax feature of your Lexmark P3150 printer. For the analog phone signal, contact your phone service provider and verify from them if your connection has one. if these two requirements (fax modem and analog phone signal) are met, proceed to setting up the connection.

From the phone jack in the wall > filter (*the filter splits the line into two: digital and analog) >
– digital line > DSL modem for internet connection > computer;
– analog line > fax modem on the back of your computer tower

Now, you're ready to send faxes. Refer to the printer's User's Guide.
