Law firms go ahead on green

Law firms in Manchester are cultivating more environmentally-friendly workplaces so they can produce less waste and cut down on energy consumption.

Firms have adopted measures to reduce their carbon footprint by saving energy, cutting paper usage and engaging in recycling programmes.

DWF, which has 500 staff in its Spinningfields office, hopes to become carbon neutral by 2013. It is a member of  the Legal Sector Alliance – a green alliance of law firms – and last year recruited Tyrone Jones as its head of values and corporate social responsibility to spearhead its green strategy as well as CSR initiatives.

DWF has replaced all its printers and PCs with energy-efficient ones, removed all individual desktop printers and implemented a ‘think before you print’ approach.

Recruits are all given an induction on the firm’s environmental strategy while electronic communication is favoured over paper. Salary slips, management notes and presentations are all produced electronically.

Instead of unnecessary journeys to meetings, staff are encouraged to take part in telephone and video conferencing, while all paper waste is shredded and then recycled.

But the biggest change was the move into a more eco-friendly building at Spinningfields last year, which Tyrone believes will help cut current CO2 emissions of  2,619 tonnes a year by a ‘significant’ amount.

Tyrone said: “Caring about the environment is one of our core values and an integral part of our business strategy to become a top 30 law firm by 2012. The way we do business reflects our determination to be a positive influence on social and environmental issues that our people, clients and communities consider important.

“As a responsible firm we recognise that we can be part of the solution to climate change. We are committed to demonstrating visible leadership in tackling the issues through a focus on our direct and indirect environmental impacts.”

Cobbetts was a founder member of the Legal Sector Alliance and, since joining three years ago, the firm has reduced its carbon emissions by 30 per cent. its environmental measures have included improving the efficiency of energy use in its offices.

Office lights now switch off automatically once the area is vacated. Use of daylight sensors has been incorporated into the design of Cobbetts’ Manchester office to reduce electrical output when ambient light reaches an adequate level. Computers are turned off when staff leave the building. Recycling is also high on its agenda. Waste paper is shredded before being recycled, and used toner cartridges along with mobile phones are collected and sent for recycling.

Cobbetts also encourages public transport for its 673 staff and, as an incentive, has offered  interest-free loans to purchase travel season tickets.

Paul Leyland, head of internal services, said: “We take our environmental and social credentials very seriously. As a sector, we can influence change as we have a responsibility to our clients and the community. Climate change needs to be taken seriously.”

Abney Garsden McDonald, in Cheadle Hulme, has become a ‘paperless’ office largely thanks to technology and an improved IT and case management system. The firm, which specialises in child abuse cases, scans all its documents before they are shredded and sent for recycling.

Although it keeps signed documents, when a case comes to a conclusion, hard files are destroyed unless clients want them back. Large files are emailed through an internet file-sharing system rather than printed, and staff are encouraged to use their laptops to take notes when meeting clients.

Peter Garsden, senior partner, said: “Obviously we still need paper, but in an ideal world I would like not to use any paper. with better technology I believe this can be achieved.”

Being In The Moment – A Vocal Perspective

Claron McFadden gives an astonishing performance of a contemporary work entitled ‘Aria’ written by John Cage at last year’s TEDx in Amsterdam. I think what is interesting is not only her technical virtuosity in using her voice – this is an amazing piece of singing – but the point she makes about being in the moment.

Musicians all seek to create memorable performances and go about searching for the resources, the mood, the location or the notes to do it thinking that it will be somewhere ‘out there’.  and yet, as Ms McFadden notes, we have all the resources we need at any moment in time within us to create a magnificant performance once we relax and surrender to the moment. in that moment, the door to creativity is opened and we enter into a state of flow as the music is channelled through us.

Trusting the unconscious mind helps us access levels of fluidity and expression that our thinking mind would simply hinder. What will you let go of and trust today?

What is the current definition of 'poverty level'?

I must be out of touch. it used to describe people that had a hard time feeding themselves & keeping warm. Being able to afford to eat at fast food restaurants & wearing $300 embroidered leather NBA jackets nullifies that definition.

Don't mean to turn this into a racial issue but I have never seen a so called, "poor black teen" in America who looks deprived to me. they are always wearing the latest fashions with regards to jackets and the latest sneakers that can cost $200 or 300 yet the media tells me that most black people in America are all poor and are living in poverty. I have seen however, white people living in a kind of poverty that shouldn't exist in a nation like the U.S that seems to never make the local news.

Not an easy question to answer. it depends on where you live. I don't think food stamps can be used at fast food restaurants or at clothing stores. Of course, it has been some years since I worked in the office where people signed up for them, so I may be wrong.

depends on who defines it, Obama wants us to think that 40 million uninsured people are in poverty, yet the unemployment is only 10.9 percent. those are both cooked numbers.

40 million out of 300 million (a high estimate of the U.S. population) is still 13.3 percent uninsured, yet somehow the unemployment is only 10.9 percent?

My brother and his family are kind of like that.

They never have enough money to pay bills but they bring home take-out food several nights a week. they go out to movies and they buy expensive Christmas presents for eachother. Nothing as extravagant as a $600 purse, but they still don't manage their money well.

And when they do come into money (tax refund, stimulus check) they spend most of it on unnecessary things. The most idiotic is when my SIL "redecorates." Their house is so filthy 100% of the time that they don't let anyone in for fear that someone would call CPS. Who cares if there is a pretty vase in the corner when last night's Whataburger bags are still piled up around the vase?

My boyfriend had a renter who was behind on his rent. he saw they guy standing outside his apartment and went over to ask for his rent. The guy proceeded to make excuses as to why he didn't have the money and he would pay some on it next week. Before my boyfriend walked off, he asked "So why are you hanging out on the front lawn?" The guy said with some pride "I am waiting for the rent-a-center to deliver my new TV." The guy seemed oblivious to the notion that it isn't a good idea to rent a new TV when you can't pay on the rent for the apartment.

It sounds like you're referring to people don't disclose a lot of their income to the government. In another words, tax cheats. Welfare itself doesn't provide enough money for people to buy such things, it only provides enough for their most basic needs.

I believe anyone who has a combined income of less than $30,000.

Unfortunately, their are many Military People who fall into this category. There are a number of Military Families that must use Food Stamps to survive.

I agree and know what you mean about the whiners who think they are in "poverty" because they can't afford a $600 hand bag. >_>

Edit: Sigh…. seems like I'm one of the few people who understood what you meant.

Welfare freeloaders can buy the NBA jackets and expensive shoes and have those fancy cell phones because they're all dealing drugs on the side and that income never gets reported.

there is no poverty in this country.its a life style.except for a very very few.

Obama, the Democrats' Messiah, has officially ended all poverty.

The Government has it's number but it doesn't really matter. The goal is getting us all on the dole and they're doing a great job of it!

That would be anyone that still pays taxes but doesn't receive any entitlement from the feds.

Someone that drives a BMW and is receiving food stamps

Smart Wallets React to Electronic Spending by Shrinking, Refusing to Open

Forget about Cyber Monday, how about cyber-everyday? With deals plastered across the web at all times—and the holidays quickly approaching—it’s hard not to pull your credit card out every 5 minutes. Well, if you’ve got a cyber-shopping problem, the Proverbial Wallets might be right for you. Designed by a team of researchers at the MIT Media Lab, these high-tech billfolds are digitally programmed to react to your bank account levels by shrinking in size, refusing to open, or vibrating whenever a transaction is processed. No more mindless spending—these guys will keep you in line.

MONEY MINDERS

Created by Henry Holtzman, John Kestner, and Daniel Leithinger, the Proverbial Wallets are designed to get us back in touch with our cash. With actual bills and coins, we can physically process how much we’re spending, but the digitization of money has placed a lag between our consumer impulses and their consequences. after all, what’s another purchase when it’s just another swipe of a credit card?

The Proverbial Wallets come in three attractive styles to fit your spending needs: The Mother Bear has a constricting hinge that makes it harder to open the closer you approach your monthly budget, while the Bumblebee buzzes every time a transaction is processed. The Peacock inflates and deflates with the amount of cash in your account, which puts your assets on “display” for potential mates, according to the designers.

Watch the wallets work their thrifty magic in the video below:
