I'm starting a new job Monday, full time, as someone who works the counter at this place:
extremeautocare.ca/
I know my way around cars, and parts, etc, but I was told by the owner that the job included this:
Invoicing
Tallying
Computerized Organizing (saw a database on his monitor… looked almost like EXCEL, but in blue and orange)
Taking Calls
Helping Customers (no problem)
Writing Receipts
Essentially main business counterwork as the store keeper.
He said it's busy, and stressful, so I just want to know, can someone take the time to tell me all it is that I have to do in detail, and if it's going to be as hard as the owner makes it out to be?
The shop is well known, and a very busy place. I was in there for 10 minutes and 5 customers walked in, with 3 phone calls.
You will get training for the position. Did you watch what the other counter persons did while you were there ? It will be the same thing
No one is expecting you to show up there and know the exact, detailed procedures of your position. You're not a mind-reader. someone will be there to train you. whenever I start a new job, on the first day, I always bring a little notepad & pen that fits in my pocket. just jot down little notes as you go about the day, and your training will stick.
It doesn't look like that's a ton of responsibilities, so just make sure you spend your down time getting caught up or working ahead so you can concentrate fully on the customers during peak times. Remember if you ever feel like you're wasting time, there is ALWAYS something to do. Don't be afraid to pull the "I'm brand new here" card to customers if you're a little slow. that will at least gain you some sympathy from them, but don't let it be an excuse to not learn your job. as the above poster said, a notepad can be a lifesaver learning a new job. Learning under pressure and stress will help you learn your job quickly, so don't be discouraged during your training. I'm sure by the end of your first month you'll feel like a pro at what you do. Sorry I couldn't be more specific about your job duties, but I am sure you will pick it up.

- Grant’s Sous Vide Expert (SVE) range is becoming an essential piece of equipment for the cutting-edge professional kitchen – Grant’s SVE baths now feature drain taps, programmable temperature presets, countdown timers with audible buzzer, and are available in three sizes to cater for all sizes of establishment CAMBRIDGE, England, May 25, 2011 – Grant Instruments (grant.co.uk), a world-renowned supplier of scientific, life sciences and data acquisition products, has introduced a new and improved range of sous vide cooking baths designed to meet the needs of top chefs working in cutting-edge professional kitchens. The Grant Sous Vide Expert (SVE) range has been enhanced following consultation with leading chefs specialising in sous vide techniques. As a result, all models now feature drain taps to facilitate easy tank emptying, three programmable temperature presets to allow for quick selection of the most often used temperatures, and a new countdown timer with audible buzzer which is a must-have for any busy and noisy professional kitchen. In addition, to cater for different size establishments, the Grant SVE range now comes in three convenient sizes based on standard gastronorm tanks – 12 litre, 26 litre and a 2×12 litre dual tank bath. all this plus Grant’s legendary reliability – two year warranty as standard – high precision temperature control and stability, sleek stainless steel case for easy cleaning, simple and safe operation, and great value for money. Roy Homent, catering product manager at Grant Instruments, said: “Our new Expert range has been designed in collaboration with chefs and tested in their kitchens. Sous vide baths are becoming an essential piece of equipment for the modern professional kitchen as they not only improve the taste but also provide consistency and fail-safe results, offer control over portions and costs and deliver real value for any professional catering establishment.” Sous vide, a French word meaning ‘under vacuum’, is a process in which food (e.g. a cut of beef or fillet of salmon) is vacuum packed and then slowly cooked at an accurately controlled temperature. The sous vide method enhances the taste and amplifies the flavour of the food as the juices and nutrients are “locked in” the vacuum-sealed pouch. The result is gourmet quality dishes every time. Sous vide cooking has revolutionised many top restaurant kitchens and is now catching on among chefs and gastronomy experts in mainstream restaurants, gastropubs, cooking schools and in contract caterers. As well as the taste and consistency advantages, the technique also allows for food portions to be prepared in advance – and stored safely for comparatively long periods of time – to meet peaks and troughs in demand. There are also significant space saving benefits from sous vide cooking. “Demonstrating both the versatility of our baths and the sous vide technique, one of our Expert baths was used by Heston Blumenthal as part of Channel 4’s TV series, Heston’s Mission Impossible to prepare and develop new and innovative dishes for the Royal Navy,” added Roy Homent. “The programme showed how the sous vide method could be used to produce delicious results to a budget, preserve nutrients and help overcome space constraints – the new sous vide dishes were also a massive hit with the submariners on board HMS Turbulent, a Royal Navy nuclear submarine.” Grant’s high quality range of catering products – which include the Universal Stirred Heater, the highly affordable Professional range, and the new Expert range – are available through a network of distributors covering the UK, Europe, Africa, the Americas, the Middle East and the Asia Pacific region. Grant Instruments has been designing, manufacturing and distributing temperature-controlled water baths for nearly 60 years and tens of thousands are in operation around the world.
