Nintendo Expected to Post Substantial First-Half Losses for 2011

Japanese newspaper Nikkei is reporting that Nintendo is expected to post losses of approximately $1.32 billion for the first half of 2011.

It’s been a bit of a rough year for Nintendo. the 3DS’ somewhat mixed reception, the growth of the smartphone and tablet markets and the strong yen have all contributed to the company’s current financial woes. Nintendo is expected to post a recurring loss of about 100 billion yen (approximately $1.32 billion) during its announcement of its July-September earnings tomorrow morning, according to Japanese newspaper Nikkei (via Reuters).

The 3DS has so far failed to set the handheld market alight in the same way that its predecessor the DS did, though August’s price drop has helped contribute to a boost in sales. a lack of quality titles is holding the system back, however, and many more casual gamers are turning to devices such as the iPhone and iPad rather than dedicated gaming handhelds. Nintendo is counting on its holiday lineup to help revitalize the system, but has also announced a DSi XL bundle for the holiday season, suggesting it doesn’t want to completely leave behind the 3DS profitable predecessor just yet.

Nintendo’s expected loss is almost double the 55 billion yen loss the company originally forecast. Nikkei reports that the company has incurred 40 billion yen simply in foreign exchange losses, mostly against the Euro. Shares in the company plummeted by around 7.5% to 10,800 yen following the newspaper’s report.

Video Game Targets ‘Tea Party Zombies,’ Fox News Personalities

TeaPartyZombiesMustDie.com

A screengrab of “Tea Party Zombies Must Die” depicts former U.S. Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, left, and Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly. The game is billed as “first-person shooter” featuring multiple firearms and a crowbar.

A new York-based video game developer has set his virtual crosshairs on Republican and conservative political figures in a game called “Tea Party Zombies Must Die,” which allows players to indiscriminately slaughter politicians like Michele Bachmann, Mike Huckabee and Sarah Palin.

The gruesome game, created by StarvingEyes Advergaming, is billed as “first-person shooter” featuring “Tea Party zombies” to be targeted with an “arsenal of weapons,” including multiple firearms and a crowbar. Notable politicians depicted in the game include current and previous presidential hopefuls like Palin, Bachmann, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum.  several Fox News personalities are also featured, including Huckabee, Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity and Brit Hume.

Lesser-known targets include “factory made blonde Fox News Barbie who has never had a problem in her life zombie” or the “Koch industries Koch Whore lobbyist pig zombie.” Fox News logos and a recreation of its studios can be seen in blood-spattered screengrabs posted on the company’s website.

Attention to the game’s release has heightened after violent rhetoric from Teamsters President James P. Hoffa, who in a speech over the weekend told President Obama that his supporters would “take out the son-of-a-bitches” in the Tea Party who were waging “war” against unions.

“The liberal media have been preaching for years that conservatives are the ones who invoke violent imagery and rhetoric. yet in the space of two days, the radical, pro-Obama left calls us ‘son-of-a-bitches’ and says they want to ‘take us out.’ and they follow that with a hideously violent game where they do just that — depicting ways of shooting prominent conservatives, presidential candidates and journalists,” said Brent Bozell, president of the Media Research Center. “The news media would be in an uproar if violence had been incited against liberals. Their silence disgusts me.”

The game’s developer, Jason Oda, of Brooklyn, N.Y., did not respond to FoxNews.com requests for comment. But the 32-year-old Connecticut native is no stranger to violent, politically-themed video games.

In 2008, he created “Kung-Fu election,” which invited players to choose their favorite candidate to take them into battle against a political adversary. Democrats like Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, John Edwards and Bill Richardson were pitted against Republican counterparts like Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani and John McCain.

“The would-be presidents duke it out with an array of special weapons and Kung-Fu moves that will leave only one man — er, person — standing,” reads a press release about the game. “If you thought that McCain was too old for the rigors of a grueling election, wait until you see what he can do with a bo staff in his hands!”

In 2004, Oda also created “Bushgame.com,” in which 1980s television characters waged war against monstrous versions of officials in the Bush administration. At the end of each level, players would receive a text critique that blasted the president’s position on Iraq, the economy, taxes and Social Security, according to The associated Press.

“I just hoped that people can go beyond the obvious little soundbites you hear all the time and have better ammunition and better understanding of the reasons why Bush should be out of the White House,” Oda told The associated Press at the time.

Oda’s website claims a list of clients that includes high-profile firms like Pepsi, Hasbro, Sears, UPS and NASCAR, among others.

But those claims are questionable. NASCAR, for instance, told FoxNews.com on Friday that it had never had a relationship with the game’s developer.

“NASCAR has never had a relationship with Starving Eyes,” the racing giant said in a statement to FoxNews.com. “Starving Eyes falsely claimed NASCAR as a client, but has recently taken down all NASCAR references from its web site”

Huckabee discussed the game during his weekday radio commentary.

“I’m personally flattered to be included in this young game-makers efforts to be funny, and I even support his First Amendment rights to produce things that are in poor taste or unseemly to rational people,” he said. “But I do not support the hypocrisy of the left who scream at all offenses they can manufacture toward conservatives, but turn their backs on the same standards when applied to someone of their own political ilk,” he told FoxNews.com.

What's going wrong? Its supposed to PLAY gamecube games.?

Recently, I bought a copy of Super Mario Sunshine so that I could play it on wii. The first few times that I played it, it worked fine. somewhere around the 5th-6th time that I played it, i tried to go into one of the 'secret' levels, where the 'dark mario' steals FLUDD, and I got an error message saying that 'the disk could not be read' and so I restarted it, and it was fine. Then, as i kept playing, the error message became more and more frequent whenever I tried to play those certain levels. after a while, it just quit giving me the actual level, so I just quit trying to play those levels. About a week ago, i tried to play it again, and the game wouldn't even get to the title screen without giving me the error message and making me restart the wii. later that day, it was back to like it was without the 'secret' levels working. today, I tried to play it, but no matter how much I tried, it wouldn't even get me to the title screen.

I know my wii recognizes the game at first, because when the game starts, it shows the nintendo logo and you hear mario's trademarked cry, "Whaahaa!" Wii games register fine when I play them, but I don't have another gamecube game to test if its just all gamecube games that screw up (which I doubt because the game would only screw up when I went to certain levels). I have even tried using cleaner, taking special care not to scratch/ damage the game in any way. it seems like all that that does is make it angrier! after cleaning it, I usually have to wait ~24 hrs. before it will work again (minus the levels).

I'm just just a nerd who wants to play his classic mario game, please help!

The game disc itself is scratched or deficient. I'd just go get a new one. It's like 10 bucks used at gamestop.

It cant read that part of the CD

Examine the disk thoroughly. Any fingerprints or stains need to be cleaned. Unplug and replug the wii and re-try. if it doesn't work buy a dvd repairer and make sure it can fix GAMCUBE games. if it still doesn't work then take it to a professionall. if it STILL doesn't work then I'm afraid you need to buy a new copy. if it was used then your problem is right there. if any crumbs or something got into a scratch in the game then it will be like a virus. it will break more and more blocking more parts of the disk. So clean it VERY THOROUGHLY.

Hope I helped

Kevin Butler is Back with Sony’s New ‘Long Live Play’ Campaign

Sony’s launched a new PlayStation marketing campaign, and brought a familiar face out of his four day retirement to do it.

Kevin Butler announced on August 26 that he was tired of being the VP of everything and had gone off to be president of his uncle’s flooring company.

PlayStation fans needn’t fret, though — he’s back in Sony’s latest marketing campaign, dubbed Long Live Play. The campaign will be rolling out across the web, TV networks, retail and social media from today, as Sony begins what is presumably a big holiday push. With a strong lineup of games inbound coupled with a new lower price point for the PS3 — and this year’s PSN debacle a distant memory for most people — Sony clearly feels confident.

“[Long Live Play is] designed to celebrate gamers from all walks of life and recognize you for making us who we are today,” writes VP of product marketing Scott Steinberg on the PlayStation Blog. “We are committed to the continued expansion of the types of services and content that have made the PlayStation name synonymous with interactive entertainment and hope that through the Long Live Play campaign our dedication to you, the PlayStation fans, truly shines through.”

Enjoy the video above — doubtless the first of many.

LinkedIn Files for Initial Public Offering

LinkedIn, the business-targeted social networking website, recently filed for an IPO, meaning that it will soon sell public shares in the company. The Mountain View, CA-based company is one of the first high-profile networking corporations to enter the public domain.

Filing this request with the Securities and Exchange Committee (SEC), LinkedIn declined to comment on the number of shares that will be made available and their price range. However, the listing documents from this case give us one of the first looks into the profitability of large social sites.

During the first nine months of 2010, the professional networking brought in $165 million in revenue, grossing $1.85 million as a net income. The past year was financially strong considering the fact that LinkedIn lost $3.4 million during the same time period a year earlier. The company made stated that it does not expect to be profitable this year due to increased investment in infrastructure and expansion.

Though many online companies survive on advertising revenue alone, LinkedIn has a three-pronged approach – premium subscriptions, hiring solutions for resource managers and advertisements.  This diversification makes the company stronger, a sentiment affirmed by industry analyst Debra Aho Williamson:

The more diverse your business can become, the less exposure you have if there is downfall in a certain market. you want to see a rounded business.

Rather negatively, the company did say that it does not have a substantial majority of users visit on a monthly basis. In addition to this, LinkedIn is one of the smaller networking sites. Facebook, a competitor to the business-targeted site, reported $1.2 billion in revenue during the first nine months of 2010, raising questions as to how strong this investment would be.

Nevertheless, LinkedIn’s implied value is floating around $2.5 billion and they will only be selling around 10 percent of it to facilitate international expansion.

What do you think? Will LinkedIn’s IPO encourage other social networking sites to jump on the public bandwagon? Will LinkedIn survive as a public corporation? let us know in the comments below.
