PHILADELPHIA — a person familiar with the deal says the sale of the Philadelphia 76ers has been approved by the NBA Board of Governors.
The person spoke on the condition of anonymity Friday because the sale has not yet closed. That could happen early next week.
The sale was approved by the board this week, paving the way for New York-based leveraged buyout specialist Joshua Harris to take control of the franchise. It ends Comcast-Spectacor’s 15-year run of ownership that included a trip to the NBA Finals.
Comcast-Spectacor, led by chairman Ed Snider, purchased the Sixers from Harold Katz on April 24, 1996. Comcast-Spectacor also owns the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers.
Harris buys the Sixers with the NBA in the midst of a lockout. The first two weeks of the regular season have already been canceled.
Harris is one of three founders of Apollo Global Management, a publicly listed alternative investment manager. he leads a group that includes former NBA player agent and Kings executive Jason Levien.
The 76ers were valued this year by Forbes at $330 million, 17th in the NBA, and have a TV deal with cable station Comcast SportsNet through 2029.
Harris co-founded Apollo Global Management in 1990. he has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business and a master’s degree from the Harvard Business School.
his group is purchasing a team that hasn’t won a championship since 1983. Under Snider’s ownership, the 76ers lost to the Lakers in the 2001 NBA Finals.
Snider said last month that sagging crowds and massive financial losses led Comcast-Spectacor to pitch a “for sale” sign and strike a tentative deal to sell in July.
“It was mostly economics,” Snider said of the decision.
“A lot,” Snider said, declining specifics. “We felt that we had given it our best shot and it was time for someone else to take over.”
The deal did not include ownership of their building, the Wells Fargo Center.
The Sixers have won only one playoff series since 2001 and have been stuck in mediocrity for most of the last decade. they haven’t had a winning record since 2004-05, but have made the playoffs three times since.
this past season, the Sixers won 41 games and stretched the Miami Heat to a five-game playoff series in Doug Collins’ first season as coach.
Harris didn’t return an interview request through Apollo on Friday. Coach Doug Collins said recently he had not met his new boss.
“I think they want to feel that they own the team before they get front and center,” Collins said. “They’ve been very adamant in the fact that they want to keep a very low profile until they own the team.”
Before the lockout, the Sixers would have had about $55 million in payroll committed to next season, led by Elton Brand’s $17 million and Andre Iguodala’s $13.5 million. The Sixers spent the summer in trade talks involving Iguodala — plans that have been put on hold because of the lockout.

Hello all,
Would really appreciate your input regarding this. I work in PR and am working with a client whose predominant skill sets lie in business performance enhancement. she has a forty year career in sales, and her techniques, observations and seminars claim to enhance the performance of a company's workforce treble fold. Businesses have noticed radical performance improvements from their employees after hiring her as a consultant and she has forged a hugely successful career visiting different companies and advising them on how to break with useless conventions, introduce new techniques, reinvigorate a latent workforce – all with the objective to harness the very best from their employees. I'm trying to think of unique PR / publicity opportunities for her – aside from national and trade press, business TV and radio, etc. What inventive and imaginative PR opportunities do you think could be applied to her publicity strategy?
Thank you so much in advance, this has been eluding me.

The paragraph below is most unusual. how quickly can you find out what is so unusual about it? nothing is wrong with it but it's unusual. why?
"Gatsby was walking back from a visit down in Branton Hill's manufacturing district on a Saturday night. A busy day's traffic had had its noisy run; and with not many folks in sight, His Honor got along without having to stop to grasp a hand, or talk; for a mayor out of City Hall is a shining mark for any politician. And so, coming to Broadway, a booming bass drum and sounds of singing, told of a small Salvation Army unit carrying on amidst Broadway's night shopping crowds. Gatsby, walking towards that group, saw a young girl, back toward him, just finishing a long, soulful oration … "
(The above passage is taken from the book "Gatsby" written by Ernest Vincent Wright in the late 1930's)

The Australian share market has retreated from modest early gains, after Chinese data showed manufacturing there is growing at the slowest pace in more than two years.
The Chinese manufacturing index result of 50.9 was slightly below market forecasts of 51.3, but is still just above the 50-point level that separates expansion from contraction.
It is the 28th straight month in which Chinese manufacturing has expanded according to the survey, but is also the slowest growth in that period.
The weaker growth comes after Chinese authorities lifted bank reserve requirements nine times and raised interest rates four times since October, in an effort to cool the economy and keep inflation in check.
In contrast, Australia’s Performance of Manufacturing Index showed a 5.2 point lift to 52.9 in June – the first time local manufacturing has grown since February.
The Australian Industry Group said improved performance among textiles, construction materials, basic metals and chemicals, petroleum and coal has helped lift the index.
The disappointing Chinese data has been more pivotal for movements on the Australian share market than the more upbeat local manufacturing figures.
The resource sector gave up early gains, with BHP Billiton down 4 cents at $43.76, and Rio Tinto falling 0.2 per cent to $82.85 by 12:57pm (AEST).
Woodside Petroleum was down 0.7 per cent, and Santos down 12 cents to $13.42.
The major banks also took a hit after the Chinese figures: Westpac was down 1.2 per cent, National Australia Bank 1 per cent, CBA 0.9 per cent, and ANZ 0.7 per cent.
The biggest losers have been retailers: David Jones has slumped 3.5 per cent to $3.92, JB Hi-Fi was down 50 cents to $16.57, Harvey Norman had lost 2 per cent to $2.44, and Myer was down 1.1 per cent to $2.61.
Shopping centre manager Westfield Group was also 1.5 per cent lower at $8.53.
Telstra had bucked the negative trend, rising 1 per cent to $2.92.
Overall, the all Ordinaries index was 21 points lower at 4,639, and the ASX 200 was 0.5 per cent down at 4,584.
The Australian dollar initially dropped about 0.25 US cents on the Chinese data release, but has since recovered to 107 US cents by 1:10pm.
