Forced air heating. Can I tap a new supply to finish basement off a 1st floor run?

Assume the duct is 8 ".

I would do it from a main branch.

Check out the model info on your heater and contact the company for specs. It would be bad to tap into the system, only to find out that it isn't big enough to heat all the areas in your house. It could cost more in the long run.
Might be cheaper and more cost-effective to buy one of the new, safe, space heaters. After all, why heat the basement when not in use?

1st, realize that your air handler, heat exchange, and/or central air system all have maximum capacity capabilities. Having said that, I'd run the new duct off of the nearest trunk. 1 run will usually not make a lot of difference, but if it does add more capacity than your system can handle, that's when to upgrade the component (s) that are too small. If your duct work is still in good shape and installed correctly to start with, it won't be necessary to replace it with an upgrade to your system.

Boiler heating up but no hot water or heating ?

my boiler is heating up but i am not getting any hot water or heating. i was wondering if anyone can tell me why? it is a gas boiler and dont know were the pilot light is so cant check if this has gone out. ?? any hel would be appreciated.

If the boiler lights but goes out within minutes then it points to the pump,,this can be checked by feeling the pump casing with your hand,if its working you will feel it vibrating.Be cautious it could be very hot.if you cant feel it spinning, the screw in the front/centre must be removed and the spindle spun with a small flat screwdriver.if then you dont hear or feel it start then it will need replacing.Without more info on the type of system.Try this.good luck.

if the boiler is heating up,then your flow control valve or your water pump is not working, make sure that all the water valves are open that should be opened.

if the boiler is heating up the pilot light hasnt gone out. the pilot light is used to ignite the main burner.
Sounds maybe like a control valve isnt diverting the water.

The circulator pump or zone valves are bad.

Maxi boiler overflow problem?

When my 'Maxi' boiler is running the central heating, it overflows
hot water into the expansion tank in the loft. (NOT causing it to
overflow)
When the thermostat turns the boiler off – the back boiler makes
a rumbling/gurgling noise.
Do I have a serious problem?

The thermostat in the tank needs to be adjusted/replaced. it is allowing the water to be heated to too high a temp. before shutting off the heat source. the overflow is a safety for this and other conditions like it.

I think its a Baxi isnt it ??? as for the problem – maybe air is being dragged into the system or you've got a build up of sludge. you need to call out a corgi engineer for a diagnostic xx

Sounds like your overflow tank needs draining. This is normal every few years. Isolate the tank and drain the tank completely. then open it up again. also, you could have a leaking pressure reducing valve on the boiler, (PRV) but not as likely.

The first answer is your best bet so far!! the system is possibly 'pumping over', reducing the pump speed may help. the gurgling could also be the boiler 'kettling', as the static water boils with latent heat when the pump and boiler shut off, this could also be a wiring fault, in that the pump overrun wiring, if required may not have been completed, OR the overrun thermostat (IF fitted ) may be faulty.
