Young Cork firm RedMere’s HDMI devices top 1m sales

The company has sold the devices through global cable brands and OEMs, including Vizio, Samsung, PNY, Monster, RadioShack, Buffalo Supply inc and Kordz.

RedMere’s patented technology allows HDMI cables to be made ultra-thin and portable.

The company is capitalising on increasing demand for HDMI-enabled handheld products, such as smartphones, tablets, digital cameras and video games that now connect to a HDTV or HD projector anywhere.

Before RedMere successfully developed this revolutionary chip technology, passive HDMI cables needed large amounts of copper and PVC to handle the high-speed data rates which made the cables heavy and bulky.

Because of RedMere’s booster module, consumers can now buy a 10-foot active HDMI cable that is thin enough to coil up in their palm or pocket, but will support high-definition signal transfer, deliver picture-perfect HD images and sound, and is 3D and 4K2K compatible.

Irish firm emerges as leading provider in growing HDMI market

“Not only has RedMere exceeded expected revenue figures for 2011 but to reach the 1m unit sales mark so early in a young company’s history is a sure sign that RedMere is the leading technology provider in the active HDMI cable market,” RedMere’s CEO, Ruud van der Linden, explained.

“We work with the highest possible quality cable manufacturers, distributors and OEMs to help deliver what now is a global product – the ultra-thin active HDMI cable using RedMere’s booster module inside the connector,” van der Linden added.

RedMere’s booster module is embedded into the sink (TV) side connector of the HDMI cable.

The programmable active silicon embedded equaliser overcomes any performance limitations over wire gauge, length and frequency – allowing the self-powered module to act as the power house of the cable, replacing the need for all the copper to transmit the signal reliably.

Every single cable is individually tested at production, and compliance is fully guaranteed with the high-speed HDMI standard, future proofing these super-slim cables against 3D or 4K2K compatibility.

Shelter dogs offer love and devotion in exchange for a home

By Valerie Cranston

for the Current-Argus

CARLSBAD — a shelter dog offers love and devotion in exchange for something as simple as a home.

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals focuses on this month annually to pay tribute to all things canine in hopes of getting more homeless dogs into forever homes.

Local couple Greg and Kathy Wheeler are diehard shelter dog adopters. Whenever they feel it is time to up the canine count at home, they head to Noah’s Ark Animal Shelter. Enter their home and the evidence is obvious; the house belongs to the dogs with large pillow beds and a toy box spilling over with every imaginable toy.

Angela Cary, shelter manager, said the majority of animals that come into shelters do so through no fault of their own. They are there because people could no longer care for them physically, financially or emotionally, not because they are “bad.” looking for a specific breed? Nationwide statistics say that approximately 25 percent of shelter dogs are purebred, and that is true on a local level as well.

“Most people are shocked at how many purebred animals we get every month,” Cary said.

Adopting a shelter animal has the potential to save two lives - not only the life of the adopted animal, but possibly the life of another animal who will receive more time to find a home because necessary cage space was cleared by the adoption, she added.

Adopting a shelter animal is a great value. for a relatively small adoption fee ($50 for dogs and $40 for cats) you will receive necessary vaccinations, microchip and spay/neuter surgery. for a large female dog, these services would easily cost $250 or more if you paid for them on your own.

the Wheelers adopted Lightening, a 1 1/2-year-old Boston bull terrier/pug mix, and Pretzel, a 2 ½-year-old boxer/something mix, 16 months ago from Noah’s Ark. They just recently adopted Indie, 8, a Boston bull terrier.

when they adopted Indie, they also adopted Romeo, but he and Lightening had a personality conflict that couldn’t be resolved. the Wheelers tried everything they could think of before making the decision to return Romeo to the shelter. the happy ending was another loving family was waiting to adopt him after seeing him in the newspaper.

“We tried for five hours. he was such a neat dog, had a great personality, was housebroken and a good car dog,” Kathy Wheeler said, noting they are thankful he, too, got a great home.

Kathy Wheeler has taken the time to read about several breeds and identify what is best suited for them. no high energy dogs and no couch pooches. Medium size dogs that are moderately active yet mellow fit right in their lifestyle.

One important thing they look for is the dog that focuses on the human when approached. the dogs usually pick them by making direct eye contact.

“We had an idea of what we wanted,” she said.

Lightening showed up at a home near the Flume and was taken to Noah’s Ark. there he was in a cage with another dog. Lightening grabbed the Wheelers’ hearts through making eye contact, while the other dog just looked around.

“Lightening goes shopping for his toys and 80 percent of his time is spent playing with the toys,” said Greg Wheeler.

Pretzel has terrible scars on her back as a result of human inflicted burns. the Wheelers looked past the scars to a kindred spirit who had plenty of love to offer.

Indie, who was abandoned in the outside cage at Noah’s Ark, is still adjusting, but feeling at home more and more each day. She perks up when she sees a tennis ball, which is no doubt something pleasant from her past.

“Every dog is different - a different flavor,” said Greg Wheeler. “Every dog we’ve ever had came from the Ark.”

“It’s gratifying to give a dog a good home,” Kathy Wheeler said, noting that they prefer the homeless ones from the shelter.

EA & Klei Unveil Shank 2

Electronic Arts inc. (ERTS – Analyst Report), or EA, and Klei Entertainment unveiled their latest offering, Shank 2, which will be available from early 2012. it is the sequel to last year’s Annie Award nominated downloadable action title, Shank.

Shank 2, in line with its predecessor, has an action-packed storyline where the protagonist, Shank, a former mob hitman, returns to protect the endangered lives of the persons close to him. The  features and game controls of the new version is akin to the original version, with a new arcade-style co-op mode that gamers would have to work out together to finish off the enemy.

Shank 2 will be available for Microsoft Corp.’s (MSFT – Analyst Report) Xbox LIVE Arcade, Sony Corp’s (SNE – Snapshot Report) PlayStation Network and PCs.

EA has a hand full of releases for the holiday season, with Star Wars: the old Republic, the most anticipated massively multi-player online (MMO) game, awaiting release in December 2011.the game is expected to drive EA’s subscriber base going forward, boosting its market share in the online gaming market over the long term.

in October, EA expects to launch Crysis and Battlefield and we believe the twin releases will provide a competitive edge to EA against Activision Blizzard Inc. (ATVI – Snapshot Report).

we believe that high-quality titles, an impressive product line, increasing exposure to online and social games and diversification of the portfolio guarantees market share gains over the long term.

we believe that with EA’s variety of titles and massive fan following, the company is better equipped than many new players to gain traction in the digital format. Additionally, the strategic acquisitions made by the company in the field of social and casual gaming platforms will reap benefits in the long run.

EA boasts a solid product pipeline for fiscal year 2012, which should allow it to generate strong growth through the current fiscal year and beyond.

however, while we think the new games will shed some light in the next few months, it is hard to discount the gloomy macro environment in North America, increasing competition and weak video game results during the last 12 months, which compel us to remain cautious in the near term.

we therefore have a Neutral recommendation on Electronic Arts over the long term (for the next 3 to 6 months). for the short term (1-3 months) also, we have a ‘Hold’ rating on the stock, as indicated by the Zacks #3 Rank.

Linkin Park: A Thousand Suns – Music Review

ARTIST: Linkin ParkALBUM: A Thousand SunsRECORD LABEL: Warner Bros.RELEASED: September 14

Credit where credit’s due: Linkin Park usually does a pretty good job of meeting the lofty expectations inherent in the concept by which the band previously went by in name, and which was the title of both an EP and their first LP: Hybrid Theory.

With each  album they’ve released, they’ve incorporated a little bit of what came before—the initial Theory, which was pretty standard alt-rock combined with some elements of hip-hop such as turntables and rapping—with something new. a Thousand Suns strives for the new to an extent previously unseen by Linkin Park, but never fails to remember what made the band stand out from all the other nu-metalers.

Despite being a long-time fan, I was ready to drop Linkin Park a few years ago, before Minutes to Midnight dropped. Their style just wasn’t feeling fresh anymore; scream, rap, scream, rap, all over turntables and otherwise standard instrumentals. The band had had a willingness to branch out, producing a remix album and a mash-up with Jay-Z, with varying degrees of success—most of the songs riffed on the originals in some cool ways, but with the exception of “Numb/Encore” off Collision course there was little that was truly groundbreaking. Nothing grabbed me in the way the songs “Crawling” or “Somewhere I Belong” did the first time I heard them.

But Midnight turned me right around. I was pleased to hear the band reaping fruit from seeds planted in earlier songs like “Breaking the Habit,” trying songs that focused more on the singing and the lyrics than on style. The familiar tropes were still present, sometimes better than ever—“Bleed It Out” does some of the best rap-rock juxtaposition I’ve ever heard—but what made Midnight so outstanding was that LP was beginning to act more like a band, and less like a Theory.

In “When They come for Me” off Suns, Mike Shinoda touches on the expectations to adhere to the Theory when he raps “‘Cause even the blueprint is a gift and a curse/‘Cause once you have the theory of how the thing works/Everybody wants the next thing to be just like the first.” And LP does stick with the Theory, but on Suns the Hybrid parts are a bit more unconventional than fans have come to expect.

I personally love the new direction the band is taking. It was a little jarring at first to hear the dominance of the less-than-obvious influences of tribal drums, techno, and the Middle East on songs, but these new additions mesh well with an old friend: Chester Bennington’s singing voice. “My December,” an early LP song, showcased a vulnerable Bennington actually singing, not screaming. Don’t get me wrong, I think Bennington’s got a great grasp on incorporating melody into his screaming, but wow, the man can sing as well, too. he occasionally turned to this approach in songs like “Numb,” but on Suns, his considerable skills are on full display.

A Thousand Suns worked for me because I was always a fan of the approach as well as the final product. Linkin Park was always a misnomer to me; Hybrid Theory was what the band was all about. On this album they draw from influences from all over the world, and temper any possible over-cosmopolitanism with the heretofore unrealized power of their lead singer’s range. And because of this, I cannot wait for—or possibly imagine—what they’ll do next.

What about Amazon’s bigger, better tablet?

It's expected that Amazon will reveal its scrawny "Coyote" tablet this week, rather than the bigger, more glamorous "Hollywood" concept.

(Credit:Amazon)

It’s widely expected that tomorrow in new York, Amazon will unveil its much-anticipated tablet, the device many headline writers promise will at least maim theiPad, if not commit a full-blown 187 on its ass. So why does it feel like the year the Sega Genesis came out and I got a clearance-shelf Sega Master system for Christmas?

Probably because thetablet that we’ll reportedly see Jeff Bezos introduce this week–the Kindle Fire, a 7-inch, backlit tablet modeled after RIM’s PlayBook with Wi-Fi only and no camera–is not the coolest tablet Amazon has been working on.

Since the spring, we’ve heard rumors, tips from anonymous sources, and analysts all describing Amazon’s work on two tablets–a 7-incher and a 10-inch version that could feature all sorts of goodies, including free 3G, free Amazon Prime, and a dual-mode option that makes it possible to flip between a backlight and e-ink.

But for the past month, it seems that Amazon has decided to turn its attention to getting out only the smaller tablet for the holiday shopping season. Unfortunately, the tablet/e-reader/whatever that will be introduced tomorrow will likely be the one we’ve known all summer by its code name, “Coyote”–a scavenging canine that feeds on nature’s scraps in its most harsh environments–and not the larger one with all the sweet goodies code-named “Hollywood”–the center of all that is decadent and glamorous in our universe.

There’s an outside chance that both tablets could be introduced tomorrow, but most reports have the big-time 10-inch Hollywood tab following the 7-incher at some point next year.

So what gives? why does Amazon seem determined to come out of the gate into the crowded tablet arena armed with a half-charged taser instead of a bazooka?

Related stories• Amazon’s press event, Wed. 7 a.m. PT (live blog)• What to expect from Wednesday’s Amazon event• Amazon inks tablet deal with publishers, report says• new Amazon tablet called the Kindle Fire?

Apparently, Amazon has decided it doesn’t want to compete head-to-head with the iPad. more likely, it’s got its eyes on the Nook 2, which is supposed to be dropping any day now. The Nook has already become a popular choice with folks looking for a basic tablet that’s much cheaper than the iPad. The Amazon tablet isn’t expected in stores before November, so the early announcement could be a move to preempt the next Nook.

Another possibility is that Amazon wouldn’t be able to deliver on the hype surrounding the expected low price-point of its tablet debut with the bigger “Hollywood” tablet and all its supposed bells and whistles. With all the talk about a possible “loss leader” from Amazon to push tablets into the hands of potential shoppers, coupled with the rush on discontinued $99 HP TouchPads, another new $500 tablet might have a hard time wooing consumers away from the iPad.

Even so, it seems like now is the time to go big or stay home. A dual-mode Kindle/tablet hybrid with free 3G sure sounds like an easy sell for the hot new gift item of the holiday season to me, even if it does cost more than $300. Besides, between now and 2012 is an eternity in tech time. by then we might be anticipating the latest entry into the tablet market by Netflix or Hulu or–why not?–CBS Interactive!

Carpe diem, mr. Bezos. how about a ticket to Hollywood for 4 million to 7 million of your closest friends?

Canon Pixma MG6220

If you’re a fan of futuristic controls, you’ll love the handsome Canon Pixma MG6220 color inkjet multifunction (print/scan/copy). the controls and LCD screen are embedded into the scanner lid, and you’ll feel like you’re operating the transporter in Star Trek the first time you use them. Beyond that, the Pixma MG6220 serves up high-quality printouts and decent scans, and it’s fast for an inkjet MFP. however, you pay a lot for this model’s good looks ($200 as of September 22, 2011), and its ink costs are a tad high as well.

Setting up the MG6220, whether through USB, ethernet, or Wi-Fi, is easy. Canon has updated the look of the installation-routine dialog boxes, though they still aren’t as professional in appearance as Kodak’s. Fortunately, the software bundle that handles scanning, OCR, and other chores is as efficient and capable as any of the competition’s.

Yes, the MG6220′s control panel, which debuted last year on the pricier Canon Pixma MG8120, looks futuristic. And yes, it has undeniable “wow” appeal. but we have the same complaint about it now as we did before: It isn’t as efficient as it could be. the three buttons below the flip-up 3-inch LCD screen, which you use for selecting options on the display, seem like an unnecessary alternative to the usual navigation and selection buttons. Frequently you have to lift your fingers off the navigation controls and shift over to the selection buttons, which adds up to a lot of wasted motion.

Despite our gripes about the control panel, the MG6220 is generally easy to use, with the possible exception of printing on CDs or DVDs. the task, which involves inserting a tray into a separate feed slot, is easy enough after you’ve done it once, but Canon’s convoluted instructions make getting up to speed harder than it should be.

The MG6220′s media handling is a bit beefier than it might appear at first glance. in addition to the 150-sheet rear vertical feed for all media types, you’ll find a 150-sheet drawer for plain paper hidden at the bottom of the unit. the MG6220 automatically duplexes (prints on both sides of the paper), but it offers no ADF (automatic document feeder) for the scanner–this is not an MFP for scanning long documents. the unit includes media slots for CompactFlash, MultiMediaCard, Memory Stick, and SD Card, and it also has a USB/PictBridge port.

Speed and print quality are high points for the Pixma MG6220. Text looks quite good–sharp and dark–and arrives at a brisk 7.8 pages per minute on the PC, and 8.14 ppm on the Mac. Photos printed on plain paper look nice, though a tad washed out, and they print at over 3 ppm (snapshot size). Full-page photos printed to glossy paper appear vibrant and clear, but print at only 0.6 ppm; that’s about average for an inkjet MFP.

The MG6220′s ink costs are a bit pricier than average. the 311-page black cartridge costs $16, which translates to a high 5.1 cents per page. the cyan, yellow, and magenta cartridges cost $14 each, and last from around 450 to around 480 pages (about 2.9 cents per page per color). a four-color page will cost you just a hair over 14 cents per page.

If you want an MFP that delivers the basics with better-than-average speed and style, the Canon Pixma MG6220 is a worth a look. If you need an ADF (and can do without the space-age looks), check out its more business-oriented cousin, the Canon Pixma MX882, which includes an ADF and a more conventional control panel for about the same purchase price.

A Seaman’s View of Beachhead Fight

From his observation point aboard a Navy “reefer” laying offshore, Lt. (jg) James M. Kehlor described the evacuation of United Nations forces from Hungnam in a letter received this week by his parents, Mr. and mrs. J. M. Kehlor of Woodleaf Star Route.

Kehlor, who has been on active duty with the Navy since Thanksgiving 1949 said the temperature was about 16 degrees and that on Dec. 18, in the midst of the evacuation, the wind dropped below 30 mph for the first time in days.

“This is the last American group in North Korea and is the same as Dunkirk,” Kehlor wrote of the evacuation. “We are trying to save all our men and as much equipment as possible.

“The warships are shelling the enemy day and night. the planes are working all day long and are blasting anything that the Chinese use. the pilots say that the ground in the fields approaching Hungnam is covered with dead Chinese.

“We are in the final stages of evacuation and on the last days the Navy will destroy the entire city with its air fields, factories and residential areas.

“The American perimeter is about eight miles and the last ridges are covered with tanks to keep the enemy from firing down on the port where the evacuation is now going on. They shipped out about 26,000 men yesterday and about that many have been leaving each day. there is a steady stream of merchant ships in and out of here carrying men and equipment. We are now provisioning the hospital ship, which needless to say, is working day and night.

“They have been flying men out from the airfield in a steady stream, one plane every couple of minutes, until today and the field is now a mass of burning buildings. the Navy is to destroy it tomorrow by shellfire. the demolition crews are working now and we can here practically a continuous roar of guns, bombs and T-N-T.

“We went alongside a cruiser yesterday and they kept right on firing. Our ship was jarred from stem to stern with each salvo. We will pull out on the next to last day and go back to Japan.”

Kehlor was aboard the USS Merapi, a refrigerator supply ship. he was first commissioned as a maritime service officer shortly before Pearl Harbor and received his Naval Reserve Commission at the same time. During World War II he served with the Merchant Marine.

Korea Casualties 1,436 For Week

WASHINGTON (UP) — the Defense Department announced today that 44,878 American casualties, including 5,870 dead, were officially reported in the Korean fighting through last Friday. this casualty summary, 16th issued for the Korean War, showed 1,436 casualties for the week. this was approximately the same as the total for each of the three preceding weeks.

Casualties actually are higher because of the time lag required to notify the next of kin. Indications are that the list includes only a few of the casualties suffered since the Chinese communists launched their all-out attack in Korea.

The Army bore the brunt of the causalities with a total of 28,713. the Army casualties included 4,874 dead; 18,947 wounded; 4,179 missing; 104 prisoners of the communist; and 609 once missing but now found.

The Marines had 4,517 causalities, 844 dead; 3,651 wounded and 22 missing in action. Navy casualties of 366 included 52 dead; 256 wounded; 55 included 52 dead 256 wounded; 56 missing and two once missing and now returned. Air Force casualties totaled 282, comprising 100 dead; 16 wounded; 144 missing; three known to be prisoners and 19 once missing and now found.

Stu: These casualties are after just 6 months of war.

Stu’s Notes:

Unlike WWII, Korea and Vietnam were basically ground wars, with most of the casualties taken by the Army and Marines. in WWII the losses were heavy in all our services as the fighting was worldwide and there is a lot of ocean and air out there with the enemy everywhere we went, land, sea and air.

I think Gen. MacArthur thought President Truman would let him go into China, maybe with the atomic bomb, so he stretched his lines way too thin for a ground war. Then we were fighting on the run, all the way down the Korean peninsula. We then regrouped and fought our way back with a new general to the 38th parallel, where we still stand to this day, staring at each other.

Crucial’s new 8GB memory module

Crucial, a memory testing and upgrading company, has released its 8GB DDR3-1333MHz UDIMM (desktop) and SODIMM (laptop) memory modules to support Intel Core i7 and i5 processors.

The high-capacity memory module caters for excessive multi-tasking without hindering system performance and maintaining responsiveness.

The 8GB high-capacity module is a memory solution for smaller form factors such as laptops, all-in-one PCs and home theatre PCs – which contain only one DIMM slot.

The 8GB DDR3-1333MHz SODIMM memory modules are also 1.35V, compared to the 1.5V standard, both reducing power consumption in lower voltage devices and increasing battery life.

Desktop users can also benefit as the 8GB Crucial memory module cancels the needs to utilise multiple DIMM slots to take advantage of the maximum RAM capability of their system.

The Crucial 8GB DDR3-1333MHz desktop and laptop memory modules are available in kits ranging from 16GB to 24GB and include a limited-lifetime warranty. They can be purchased via Crucial’s local channel partners.

Seagate introduces its GoFlex Satellite wireless storage device

Storage solutions provider, Seagate, has debuted its GoFlex Satellite – a battery-powered external hard drive which uses wireless technology to extend the storage capacity of Wi-Fi enabled devices.

The new member of the GoFlex family contains 500GB of disc space, Wi-Fi access over 802.11b/g/n, a rechargeable battery and can be paired with up to three devices at any one time. it connects to compatible devices through the free GoFlex Media application, which operates on Apple iOS (iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch) and any Android.

Seagate Technology senior vice-president and managing director of Asia-Pacific and Japan, BanSeng Teh, said, “no longer will a consumer feel as though it is a compromise to purchase a lower capacity tablet or iPad.
